Happens quite a lot in Europe, I know a few who've done it, one even had a go on a commuter stopper and none of them were train drivers back here.

Why dont you put this in general discussion? I think the stories part means stories as in from the past, like 'when I used to work on the railways....'

It doesn't matter it seems fine where it is too me. The above link is a story and being from a daily newspaper it must be a news 'report'. Although i agree with you about the nostalgia part.

Anyway regarding the topic it is interesting and I'm very surprised that this would be allowed to happen anywhere in the U.S not alone a commuter line in New York.

A smidgin of nostalgia.When Saltley depot gained work over the North Warwick line after Tyseley closed,the regular commuters would sit by the open cab door on the DMU and let us know when the smaller halts would be near in the pitch black winter evenings.(No highly illuminated stations then).One Saltley driver,adopting the measures to get bearings,which was go through the gears 1,2,and three,then drop into fourth and close the throttle,there being a station near to.He made out the glow of a cigarette,and applied the brake,opening his window to inform the punter "Back in a second".Reversal of one coach length allowed the regulars to get off,and the smoker on.Hanging offence nowadays no doubt.

I know most people would be quick to condemn the driver for his actions. But, to be honest, I'm a bit envious of the passenger! And I'm sure I'm not the only one on here who is.
