(This would have been a 317. Is it possible to lock a carriage off?)

On any stock with doors between carriages, it is a simple matter of locking the external and gangway doors, on some stock with a carriage key, on others with a different type of key (I don't work on the railways, I don't know my different types of keys!)

On a 319 it has gangway doors that cannot be locked.

I don't think there's a lock on 317s. 365s can be locked with a T key (same on 465s?), and I seem to remember a lock on the GN 321s not sure if this was a T key or BR1. On the latter there is a break glass panel to override the lock in emergency.

They've got a key lock about halfway down the doors (BR1?) and I've seen them locked out before.

Not that I have seen and I drove 3 units today (prepped one). Has there been a mod done for the Northern units ?

I wouldn't have thought anyone on the track would've been able to hear the horns above the noise of the English Electric tractor thrash anyway?! ;)

In the words of the exact same driver; "chances are the engine will go before you even need to hear a horn"

Back on topic, i've heard of drivers failing units for having full toilet tanks on more than one occasion.

many years ago I rode on a class 40 hauled transpennine set from Holyhead. Rear carriage, rear compartment Mk2. The rear right hand door window was missing. It had literally dropped out of the frame when the door was closed around 15 mins before start. The guard spotted it, made a comment that he should take the coach out of service but decided to go anyway as he regarded it as low risk (end door, rear of train). He made a comment on the lines of "if you see anyone leaning out, stop them". We rode as far as Warrington with the window still missing, I presume the train completed its journey in the same state
