Driver eyesight question

I wanted to be a train driver at one stage but was told it wasn't possible due to me wearing glasses for shortsightedness, this would have been mid-to-late 80s.
I'm pretty sure this isn't the case now as I've seen bespectacled drivers and none of the job adverts on here appear to mention it. Was this ever the case? If so when/why did it cease?

I require glasses and for shortsightedness and I'm on a course soon. As long as the Occupational health are fine with it and you meet the minimum standards in testing sight-wise then its all good. Just means if approved you'll need a 2nd pair of glasses and must wear your glasses at all time during the Job. I guess it ceased after a proper review of dated policy. To some degree such a review may(in my opinion) occur for laser eye surgery correction which is still very a no no.

Thanks. I'd say it will be highly toc dependent for the eye stuff and on a specfic case.
