I hope this is the correct section of the forum to make this enquiry. Apologies to the moderators if not.

My Grandfather worked on the railway out of Perth shed, first as a fireman and then as driver on steam traction but then, later, on diesel. Being based out of Perth, I understand his regular lay overs were Carlisle and Inverness.

Interestingly, I have a newspaper cutting of him being involved in an incident involving a Type 2, I believe a Class 26 or 27, on the Highland Main Line in the 60's were a boiler blew up and expelled a boiler plate laterally, nearly killing him (if the journalist isn't sensationalising !), which I will try and scan and post later.

Anyway, my question is this: Is there a record held anywhere which will provide information on which engines and motive power he was checked out on/cleared to drive?

Search the internet a bit. There are some former sheds which have lively websites/groups - most notably 70A Nine Elms (not much good for Perth, I admit). But they may exist for Perth too.
Or Kingmoor/upperby. (12A 12B)

Also check, there may be a Caledonian/Highland Railway yahoo group, for example. Some such groups a lively, some almost dead and buried.
