Once again no rail service between Chester and Llandudno Junction today and a rail replacement service is in operation.
This got me thinking; what happens to the drivers rostered to work on days where engineering work is scheduled and therefore fewer/no services? Are drivers required to take days off? Use some of their leave allowance? I guess the same could be asked about other on board staff too.

Either Rest days or revert to spare.

The diagrams would be altered to take into account the engineering works. A lot of time in the diagrams could include travelling by bus/taxi which makes the diagrams less productive. In fact, although there may be less passenger services running, a lot of the time I would say the amended diagrams require more drivers than would normally be needed.

Indeed and of course there is a smaller number of drivers rostered to work at weekends to draw from.

We don’t end up sitting spare very often, although it does happen.

Today, for example, we have a block between Salisbury and Romsey. The drivers who would usually work through from Bristol/Westbury to Portsmouth are shuttling to/from Salisbury. The Fratton drivers that would usually work the other way are shuttling between Fratton and Romsey. All of them are still working as they would have done, with journeys undertaken reflecting the blockage.

Hopefully we get a win out of it & remain spare or get an early or easier diagram out of it. Sadly it sometimes goes the other way. If having a booked turn we have to be booked on spare at the rostered time even on Sundays when this is in effect overtime as it's part of your guaranteed Sunday turns but can be moved to an alternative turn subject to local agreements such as ours which is no more than 3hrs either side.
