Preston no longer sign via Chorley & Bolton or Westhaughton, only via Eccles (Chatt Moss).

We all used to sign all three ways at one time but haven't been re-trained after the Farnworth Tunnel remodelling.

I bow to your knowledge, haven't spoken to him for some time. But I do know a few of them still go to Piccadilly if needed.

We all go to Picc, from Crewe via Stockport and the Styal, and from Preston via Golborne and Eccles...

About 20-25 of us sign the S&C, I gather with the current closure and lack of diversions that that knowledge has lapsed and is unlikely to be renewed. Shame really it was hard work with a 57 but a pleasant trip with a 221, come to that I don't sign 57's anymore either...

Thanks for that, Neil. Settle and Hellifield / Clitheroe / Bolton would seem to be a major and very important diversionary route to me provided it was electrified and / or you had more 221's to make it viable. I guess the bean counters know best in this day and age!

Westbury also possibly Bristol TM and Fratton on some journeys.

Fratton crews sign the route throughout - When I was doing my route familiarisation last year I had a cab ride from Cardiff to Portsmouth, same driver throughout. At my refresh this year we changed at Westbury (only)

Chiltern Birmingham services are generally worked throughout by drivers, although it is not unusual for trains running to/from Snow Hill to have a crew change at Moor Street because this is where Chiltern traincrew are based. A few Birmingham services have a driver changeover at Banbury. On MU trains guards only work between Banbury and Birmingham, with DOO operating south of Banbury. The exceptions are the loco-hauled trains which operate with a guard throughout.

In addition although DMU operated services are indeed DOO south of Banbury guards can be found on a few such trains effectively working as Ticket Examiners. I would expect such jobs are to balance the turns on the loco-hauled journeys.

Rumour has it that when the Chorley-Bolton line is electrified we'll learn it again.
