What, the risk of cloned plates discourages car use?

Don't be ridiculous. Of course it doesn't. I have never met a driver who felt that that was a reason not to own and use a car.

Maybe not on its own, but every little thing we can do to inconvenience these people is a step towards them giving up this dangerous and antisocial activity.

No, it's clearly completely obstructing the barrier. Assuming the barriers are controlled from the adjacent signal box, and therefore also that the signaller had a full view, perhaps he/she lowered what was possible to prevent other vehicles crossing/stopping and possibly worsening the situation. I'm also assuming here that it is possible to interrupt the lowering of the barriers in this way, given the positions shown in the picture.

The adjacent signal box closed some years ago.
Caersws Station LX is controlled via CCTV from Machynlleth SCC.

I know who owns the car!!
Yes, they were dropping someone off at the station.
I will have words although I suspect she is embarrassed enough.

I'm afraid to say that this is quite typical of the parking around here. It is quite normal to find cars parked all day along the road from the station foot entrance, despite there being road markings to prevent it.

The car does not look to be blocking the railway line, only the barrier, so there is, at least physically, nothing directly in the way of the train. It is a dumb place to park (although sadly little surprises me anymore when it comes to human stupidity) and yes I can appreciate that trains will not be allowed to run whilst it is there.

I can just visualise the motoring lobby looking at that and blaming Network Rail for not providing adequate parking facilities at the station (if there is one nearby).

See above.

There is a car park opposite, but it is generally full by 0830. There is more land owned by NR available, but it is currently rented to a building company and they wanted to move to a better site but cannot get Planning permission to build there.

Blue badge holder?

No, and irrelevant anyway.

Having road markings is one thing, but if there is no-one to enforce them and penalise offenders, to the point where peopel know they can get away with parking there, then they are little more than decoration.

I know of one location where someone stopped straddling the stop line, so the signaller dropped the gate on the car, not once but twice leaving a nice big dent in it.

The signaller has since retired.

I noticed that in the original report's on-line photo there is no sign of any yellow line (double or single) or a yellow box (although the wet road and lighting could be hiding them.) I realise that no yellow lines are needed as there is a double white line in the middle of the road which means no parking. I'm surprised there is no double-hatched yellow box though, which I would have expected. They do tend to attract motorists' attention, however dim.

http://www.drivingtesttips.biz/double-white-lines.html repeats
"the Highway Code (rule 240) states that you must not park on a road marked with double white lines,"
but I still think a yellow box would have been better...

Just another example of the selfish "me-first" culture that has been encouraged here in the UK for the last 35 yrs, unfortunately. I would hope that crushing a few (more) cars would help get the word round, unfortunately it tends to increase rail overcrowding as we lose more units, and I guess the people who need to be educated are not "on receive anyway!"

Do you know how level crossings work?

Your not supposed to stop on a level crossing or enter one if your exit is not clear regardless if there are hatched markings or not.

I suppose the only possible nefarious use (regarding cloning) of an internet image might be that, in this case, the car was in Shropshire and might be assumed to be locally-owned (though not guaranteed), so someone in, for example, Cornwall or Norfolk, could take a risk that using the plates for another vehicle so far away may not arouse suspicion prior to being used illegally owing to the two cars' wide geographical separation. However, I think it's a very small risk. Plates are usually blanked out by the press in these sort of images in any case.

Caersws is in Powys, not Shropshire.

Almost true, but how many motorists (including you) really know the rule? You can enter a yellow box (edit, sorry, not a level crossing) if your exit is only obstructed by traffic waiting to turn right.
A hatched box might do the trick, I'm sure that lots of level crossings have them, but presumably because of queueing traffic problems, rather than idiots parking.

I wonder if that is the same person that I know who did the exactly the same thing?

And I must admit I have dropped the barriers to almost touch a car after warning them several times that they needed to reverse out of the way, and got a mouth full of abuse. They got reported!!

Wrong!
When I learnt to drive 31 years ago the rule was-
Do not enter a box junction unless your exit is clear, the only time you can stop in a box junction is if you are turning right and your exit is clear but you are prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic.

Not wrong! ;)

You can enter if turning right and the exit is clear. You are allowed to stop if blocked by either oncoming traffic or other vehicles waiting to turn right.

Turning right on a level crossing isn't recommended though.

Jesus, what a stupid comment!!

No worse than any of the other sweeping generalizations made on here or any other forum, having said that there does seem to be plenty of people for whom paying "road tax" engenders an inflated sense of entitlement.

They park badly so therefore must be disabled?

"I'll park where I like, but it's OK 'cos I've got a blue badge".

^^^Not my opinion
My opinion vvv

Blue Badges are necessary. Abuse of the waivers that the Blue Badge offers should not be tolerated.

Anyhow, that's going a bit off-topic.

My step mum has the right idea, she rarely if ever parks on double yellows (and only if safe to do so) and will only park in a disabled bay if she is getting out of the car.

Obviously a person with morals, unlike quite a few (not all) blue badge holders.

Presumably, as the car isn't actually foul of the track, the train could have been cautioned over but it several Network Rail staff would need to be present to do so safely. However in this case, if as stated the driver was just dropping someone at the station, the delay was probably not long and would have been cleared before anyone could have arrived unless they were nearby anyway.

As long as the lights were flashing, which they obviously were because the other barriers were down, then yes the train could have been cautioned over the crossing, without staff being present, but it is at the discretion of the train driver after he has been told he could do it.

Do you mind I am from Surrey
There are unfortunately a small number of blue badge holders that gives them a right to park where there like and how they like and yes i know some and it is very amusing listen to them.

go in to nearby Newtown and see how no one knows how to use a box junction
