Down fast to down slow at Forest Hill

It looks like this service https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:L80263/2021-11-05/detailed is going to use the down fast to down slow cross-over at Forest Hill on a few early mornings in November. Don’t know if any track bashers are interested in rarely used, in passenger service, cross-overs. It’s not one I’ve ever managed- many years ago I did get the up slow to up fast one just to the south of Sydenham. I suspect the reverse at Crystal Palace may be used a bit more often.

They are both rarely used. Pretty much only used for ecs's, seasonal trains and during engineering works like the example above.

The best chance to use the crossover is probably when there are engineering works between Sydenham and Norwood Junction and trains divert via Crystal Palace.

Yeah, that week there are overnight engineering works between Sydenham and Norwood Junction Tuesday - Friday.

I rode that train on one of the occasions when it has previously run. It must have had a driver at both ends as the reversal west of Crystal Palace was barely noticeable as a delay.

I got lucky with that crossover once and managed to red pen it on a late running London Bridge - Crystal Place train one Sunday. It was meant to call at all stations but due to late running (I can't remember why), it ran fast!

Was during daylight hours too which is a big plus when it comes to covering new track. I don't really count it in the dark

The up one at Sydenham I got on a train from South Croydon which was due along the fast but set off along the slow until crossing over. Possibly due to the slow to fast xover at Norwood not being usable.

I am suprised they are not just diverting that train via peckham rye to save on the reversal!
