I am travelling from Dover Priory to London Victoria this Saturday (super off peak day return ticket £20.00). DVP to VIC is straightforward, eg dep08.45 arr12.37.

But for the return journey from VIC to DVP there are no direct trains (change at Faversham because of engineering works near Margate). So I thought I could return from Charing Cross.

Because of this, is it possible to get 1 ticket DVP-VIC and then return CHX-DVP to save a bit of time?
Without an extra charge though!

Hopefully i’ve explained the above clearly enough!

Technically no, but ask the guard before boarding your return journey and he'll be unlikely to refuse, considering the engineering works (I've been in this situation before) - only issue you may have is the gateline staff at Charing Cross, but just explain and they should let you through :)

I take it this ticket has LONDON VICTORIA as the destination, as opposed to the £29.50 OPR which is valid from CHX as well and I assume has LONDON TERMINALS as the destination. It's not very clear from the National Rail site that this restriction is present, only that it's routed NOT HS1 and the restriction code F4. I'm not really sure why this ticket exists since both routes are operated (and presumably priced) by SouthEastern, but maybe the Victoria trains were not well patronised.

As MikeW says, you can try your luck with the guard (or more likely gateline staff). Personally I would just go from Victoria as even with changing it doesn't take much longer than the train from CHX, and if the guard says "no" then you'll have to trek over to Victoria.

I'm puzzled. The 08.45 departure from Dover Priory arrives at Victoria at 10.37. According to the Southeastern website you can use the £20 super off peak return on that service, but only if you change at Chatham and go to Charing Cross. However, I thought that tickets from Dover to London are usually valid via any route to either Victoria or Charing Cross/Cannon Street except HS1. So I don't know why it's only offering the Super off-peak price on certain journeys and to Charing Cross only.

Perhaps someone with Avantix can assist further.

If nobody's done it by the time I get home I'll endeavour to.

Until then I can say that it appears to me that the £20 super off-peak ticket is DVP-VIC only, and DVP-1072 is only available as an off-peak. Both routed NOT VALID ON HS1.

That's wierd - on the National Rail site it's shown as valid on the direct service (as you would expect!). The £20 ticket is to London Victoria via any permitted route (except HS1).

Indeed.

Further playing around on the SE website without starting on the NRES one suggests that the super off-peak is valid to a named terminal and is valid by any route apart from HS1 to that terminal.

The following £20 fares are available:
  • Dover Priory - London Victoria Super Off-Peak Day Return route Not Valid on HS1 £20.00. Restriction F4: Outward travel by any train except those timed to depart Mondays-Fridays before 1000; Return travel by any train.
  • Dover Priory - London Charing X Super Off-Peak Day Return route Not Valid on HS1 £20.00. Restriction F4: Outward travel by any train except those timed to depart Mondays-Fridays before 1000; Return travel by any train.
That would appear not to offer the OP the required flexibility to travel out to Victoria but return from Charing X.

Both the Dover Priory - London Victoria Super Off-Peak Day Single route Not Valid on HS1 and the Dover Priory - London Charing X Super Off-Peak Day Single route Not Valid on HS1 cost £19.90, so these do not offer reasonable alternatives. There are no Super Off-Peak Day Single fares from London to Dover.

I guess the other option then is to use the tube between the two. With an Oyster card that's only £1.90 each way, or £4 cash.

I'm not sure how much time it would save, but if you don't fancy the bus journey you could try getting the stopper from Victoria to Orpington then change.

It only says change at Faversham as thats where the train splits into 2 portions. When you go to london you will join the one from margate as such.So there is no need to get a service from anywhere else as you can still get to Dover on the same train

I made a thread about the discrepancy on here a while back and its a proper missleading bit of information that they still have not sorted out
