Travelling from Coventry to Banbury today, I noticed that every XC service I saw (3-4 services) was doubled up. I assume this is due to today being a bank Holiday, and thus extra passengers. Any idea if there any plans for this to happen more often? I regularly find the XC services on the Birmingham - Southampton / Bournmouth over crowed, it would be nice if these double Voyagers cropped up more often.

I noticed this Saturday as every service I saw south of Leamington Spa were double sets. However the line was shut south of Cheltenham (not sure where to) so this would have released spare units.

XC may have had double voyagers today, but its only because they cancelled half of there services. No Bristol-Manchester or Reading-Newcastle services were running today.

indeed this route is always busy. I was at bristol temple meads today and the hourly bristol - manchester voyager service was NOT running so cross country were probably doubling voyagers on the birmingham - southampton/bournmouth

I've been reliably informed that quite a few Voyager diagrams booked for pairs of Voyagers in the end are worked only by single units. Apparently this is because their Dellner couplers are poorly maintained and consequently don't work.

Could anyone confirm whether this is true or not?

No idea but there were plenty working over the Easter weekend so probably not that true.

Every XC set I saw on the BLS Easter railtour fest was doubled up, that was at Stoke and Derby at various points on Saturday, and the same two plus Derby-Sheffield on Sunday. Maybe saw about 10 (give or take) doubled up overall.

Sounds like a load of bollards to me Drsatan! Usually a single set vice double set will happen because Control have robbed the 2nd unit to cover a service elsewhere either because of service disruption with an external cause, or maybe even because another Voyager has failed in traffic. I'm sure what you describe may have happened, but I bet you can count the instances on the fingers of one hand.

Is it not a requirement that a sign visible from an approaching unit must be visible at the end on which the coupling is not working?

Saturday saw quite a few doubled up Voyagers, I was on one on our meet from New St to Coventry, saw one earlier on the day at Leamington Spa and I was on a double one from Birmingham to Stafford in the evening too

I'm not sure but it would explain why over the winter so many 185's went round with yellow bags over their couplers.

Isn't this prevent the coupler freezing up? I saw plenty of 158s last winter with the same bags - not sure it would have been found out that that many were faulty?

If it's known that Autocouplers won't work, TMN, they have to display a black X on a yellow background, A4, in the front window saying somthing like, DO NOT AUTOCOUPLE

Whenever XC ca double up (usually does happen on line closures) many people head for the same unit, leaving the second one empty!

Only time I can say I had not only a table, but a carriage to myself aboard an XC service.

I'm not sure - I think I have seen them at other times too. They don't tend to all run round with them on either.

Text should read :
NON-MULTI
I have only ever seen one Class 221 with this (as the illuminated display was not working) and once in a Class 57/3

Seen a fair few on NT sprinters and pacers, on EMT 158, TPE 185 and occationally TPE 170 units. And now I'm thinking right, an ATW 150 parked up in the MAN main bays.

Probably down to the usual batch of Engineering works down here on the Southern, this time all the way from Southampton Airport Parkway through to Bournemouth - So No Southampton Central terminating services, and all XC Services were starting & terminating at Eastleigh throught the Easter Weekend - Thus with no 30 Minute XC Service, guessing that XC doubled up the hourly 07/10 & 47 XC Services to Manchester Picc to cope with the extra demand on the fewer XC services, possibly also to get the right number of Voyagers back to Eastleigh DB Depot for the normall Bournemouth & Southampton services tommorow?...

IIRC, XC's Newcastle - Reading Services were extended during last May's timetable change to terminate at Southampton Central... And almost handy they are too, even though XC Still manages to leave Basingstoke ontime and arrive in Reading Late  ...Let alone the amount of time they spend standing around outside Basingstoke too!...

The amount of time we spend sat in Reading station is beyond belief! Regulated for Great Westerns here there and everywhere. Still, the problem is that we have to get across from the reliefs from Didcot to the line to Basingstoke and vice versa, so if an FGW is running late by even a couple of minutes, it screws the job.

True - Then you've got the 18:15 Service From Reading - Which sits outside Basingstoke for a good 10, if not more minutes too...

18:15 Reading Station 18:47 Basingstoke Train CROSSCOUNTRY 00h 32

As apposed to the normal

18:46 Reading Station 19:08 Basingstoke Train CROSSCOUNTRY 00h 22

Still, suppose i can't complain, it is an extra service after all, even if it's a voyager to reading and a cycle ride from there to work! Just arriving into reading station on the 08:18 ontime would be nice for an occasional change!;)

Yellow bags and yellow signs are unrelated, the yellow bags are for use in winter weather to protect the coupler from ice or snow damage. These are carried on board and stowed in the cabs.

A yellow (or white if the photocopier has run out of yellow!) notice displayed in the cab window is a NON-MULTI, and indicates that the train cannot be coupled at that end due to a coupler defect. It will show a large black cross on the outside and the type of fault (air/electrical/mechanical) on the inside.
