The picture below shows a station in North Lincolnshire with what is described as a somewhat unusual (as opposed to unique) layout. What other locations have such a layout.
I thought I'd make it more fun by not naming the station in the picture. I'm sure someone on here can.

I concur with Ulceby, on the "Barton" line. All the passenger trains use this single platform. There are junctions at either end of the station.

The early passengers have something of a treat as the first train to Barton- on-Humber is run by a Class 185 First TPE 3-car set for reasons of operational easement.

Other locations I can think of include Ardrossan South Beach, West Kilbride, and Corkerhill at a push, though the other line there is actually part of the depot itself.

I would add hartlepool on the Durham coast line to this has a dual running platform with a second like running through although the opposite line has a platform in situ its not connected to the main station.

Dunbar is a single platform on a loop off the main lines. Glenrothes with Thornton is essentially 2 single tracks together. Platform 1 for all trains to and from Kirkcaldy direction, platform 2 for all trains to and from Markinch direction.

Always was a strange decision to put it down from 2 to 1 through platform. I can remember when the footbridge was there, although boarded up and disused.

Battersby, a tiny village in North Yorkshire with a terminal station served by 2 branches, one to the east and one to the west. There's 2 lines through the station so that locos can run round their stock.

But its one platform is almost one too many for all the passengers who actually use it!

Malton on the York-Scarborough line only has one platform in use.

With regards to Polesworth, it's only served in one direction and has one down train a day on platform 1 as a parliamentary service. Monday to Saturday it gets London Midland 350-operated 1U23 06:41* Northampton - Crewe which arrives and departs Polesworth at 07:26. There is no Sunday service. As I understand it a parliamentary service has to run at least once a month and in at least one direction.

*06:38 on Saturday.

I now understand a bit more about this station following on from calling at the station on the recent meet - it is on an otherwise freight line and the two lines, I believe, are essentially independant, though I'm not best placed to explain.

I believe the first service is run by 185 as the 153 normally used is not in place so early on a morning (it comes in by ECS move from Sheffield IIRC) - it also doesn't call at all stations as the platforms in some places are too low to safely disembark the 185's. Something else of note is that the services although run by a Northern 153, are manned by a TPE crew.

Polesworth is a single platform on 4 track wcml

Polesworth is still classed as a 2 platform station, just that one platform is now derelict and inaccessible due to the bridge being removed some years ago. As trc666 says, it now just has a single working in the Crewe direction each weekday/Saturday mornings.

Castleford in West Yorkshire is another.

I had never realised only one of the platforms was used there. Passed through a few weeks back going between Leeds and Pontefract Monkhill and seeing 2 platforms I guessed they were both still in use

Slight variation on the theme but Dunbar has the very unusual layout of a platform on a single line loop off the ECML.

Bromsgrove originally had one platform on the up side (if that is the northbound side) until the other wooden platform was built fairly recently (I think it was in the 1990s).

Off on a tangent a bit, but Denham is an odd one in that the two platforms face the same way. The down platform being an island with a single face, which Im sure could be described better !!

The (double track) line between Brocklesby and Immingham is essentially the 'through' route at Ulceby nowadays. The single line from Habrough runs onto the Down line immediately south of the station, and the single platform is on that line. There's then a trailing (to 'through' freight traffic) crossover which takes the Barton units onto the Up line, and finally through the single lead onto the Barton branch proper. You can see the layout on this photo from www.tillyweb.biz - Ulceby station at the bottom, Barton towards the middle right, and Habrough (which Ulceby controls with a small IFS panel) top left. Brocklesby is top right, obviously with its own signal box.

I believe the first service is run by 185 as the 153 normally used is not in place so early on a morning (it comes in by ECS move from Sheffield IIRC) - it also doesn't call at all stations as the platforms in some places are too low to safely disembark the 185's.
I'm not sure exactly what time the unit comes across from Sheffield (or Doncaster?), but the big problem is that there's departures from Cleethorpes at both 0600 and 0700 - so even if the empty unit was there in time for the 0600, there'd then be nothing to work the 0700. The unit from the previous day then runs ECS to Scunthorpe to form the 0810 onwards from there; if it worked either of those two Bartons, it wouldn't have time to do that - though it might just be possible if the 0658 (??) ex-Barton terminated at Grimsby Town and went ECS to Scunthorpe from there. Why go to all that bother though, when there's a unit sitting at Cleethorpes with nothing to do until around 0830?
Something else of note is that the services although run by a Northern 153, are manned by a TPE crew.
Correct. Not sure whether any Northern crews still sign the route - I think some Doncaster drivers did previously though, and were used when TPE were struggling to provide traincrew.

Actually, I think you may have hit the nail on the head there - it is the fact there is an improved service first thing so they need the extra unit to run it...couldn't quite remember what I was told.

You also mention that the previous days Barton unit goes on to start from Scunthorpe also rings a bell too. I believe Saturday is marginally different when the Barton unit is swapped by means of the Gainsborough Central Parly service, though I'm not sure if that is in addition to another swap on both Saturday and Sunday mornings

I'm not sure whether the Barton unit is regularly swapped on a Saturday daytime, but it would make sense if two days' worth of Bartons, plus a full diagram on Monday, would be pushing it for fuel. On a similar note, the 0810 ex-Scunthorpe has been terminated at Sheffield (platform 1 then straight onto the depot!) on more than one occasion when I've been on it, with another unit working forward to Lincoln.

Penryn is almost, but only double track (in the form of a passing loop) for half of its length, and there is a long disused and overgrown platform opposite.

The ECS single unit goes through Thorne at about 5-00am Mon to Sat to form the Barton Flyer, but not on a Sunday it doesn,t run vis Thorne.

Castleford Station platform has been out of use for quite a few years now, with trains running in and driver changeing ends and running back out of same platform. The foot bridge has been blocked up for years. The station is going to get rebuilt by the WYPTE, new building and bus station at front of building.

The Trent Valley four-tracking put paid to the footbridge which served the other platform, didn't it? I wonder why it gets just a parliamentary service but Norton Bridge and Barlaston - closed but never officially closed, if you see what I mean - are technically still getting 'temporary' replacement bus services?

There's a couple of those on the Glasgow Subway- they were originally double sided islands, but overcrowding has led to an additional platform being built on one side, with the island only served by trains in one direction

Does the erstwhile Dore and Totley count? Or is that stretching it given you've got a platform on the (single track) Hope Valley but none on the (double track) MML?

Cheers,

Barry

A picture paints a thousand words!

This is taken from the up platform looking in the down direction, you can see the down platform on the left, it faces away from the up platform.

It is a fairly new thing, I think it was built about three years ago. The old down platform was where you would expect it to be, on the outside of the down line (there was a big enough gap for two through lines in the six foot) but the down platform was built on the top of steep embankment and it was crumbling. I think it was about to be condemned as it was so bad, and rebuilding it would have been more expensive than building the island platform because of all the bank work that would have been required to secure the ground underneath the platform. I heard through the grapevine that Chiltern got loads of complaints about the underpass between the two platforms being a horrible place for passengers to walk though (a magnet for teenage drinkers) so that was sealed at the same time as the old down platform was demolished.
