In the 60's when "Westerns", "Warships" , "Hymeks" and Brush class 47's were the main locomotives running the services out of Paddington, if the need arose could any of these locomotives double head with two different "brand" locomotives?

I've seen a photo of one of the NBL-built Diesel-Hydraulics doubling up with a Castle class kettle on a regular service. Presumably any combination is possible with a crew on each locomotive.

Nothing to stop double heading other than any route restrictions but unless the types of loco were fitted for multiple working and compatible with each other they would both need to have a driver on board if required to be providing power (working in tandem).

The various multiple working types are listed HERE

There are two types of 'double heading'. Working in tandem or working in multiple.

Tandem working is two locos each with a crew working it.

Multiple working is two locos with one crew working both.

Multiple working depends on whether each loco is compatible with each other. Tandem working can be between different types of loco (steam assisting diesel or vice versa).
