There are a fair few passengers that travel from Edinburgh Airport via the tramlink to Edinburgh Gateway, thence to Leuchars for the bus link to St. Andrews.

A through ticket is available from Edinburgh Airport to Leuchars OR from Edinburgh Gateway to St. Andrews. But, AFAIAA, there is no through fare from Edinburgh Airport to St. Andrews for this combination.

What stops a single ticket being available?

Only that Scotrail haven't chosen to set a fare.

An example of such a fare can be found on BRFares whrre there is a fare from Wisbech (Coach) to Catterick G (Bus).

Isn't it possible for a ticket office to create the fare manually by adding the appropriate addon price? Of course, even if it is possible in theory, getting someone to do it may well be harder.

In theory, yes, but the reality is different even for staff who know their way around the ticket issuing system. Manually created fares are much more difficult than they used to be, and rightly so.

I think that requires an add on amount to exist as well - I don't see one documented for Catterick in the iKB for example, so unless it's only documented locally constructing a fare would be impossible.

As Haywain says, many places addon fares used to be acceptable (eg London) are being phased out.
