Double Deck Buses

There are a little over 5600 franchised buses here in Hong Kong and the vast majority are double deck, but certainly not all. As a guess I would say about 5000 of them (give or take a hundred or so) would be double deck, the rest single deck.

SMRT in Singapore are getting some new Enviro 500s currently being bodied in China and soon in Malaysia.

Must be relatively recent that they have appeared on the 81 as I have never seen one on the 81 since the 1980s. Out of the rest would say that the 86 is the only route where you can be guaranteed a double deck vehicle.

Deckers are allocated to 60-61 routes after headteachers of Schools on those routes complained pupils were late because single deckers that were allocated to the 60-61 were leaving pupils waiting at stops because no more passengers could board as they were full.

Vandalism is the main reason given for not using deckers, Stagecoach won't use deckers on Kirkby routes, although i've seen deckers on 17-19-19A on matchdays.

I imagine the problem is that the scallies can quite happily cause thousands of quids worth of damage upstairs and it won't be discovered until the bus is back at the depot at the end of the night!

When I used to live in Liverpool I felt safer on a single deck, especially in the evenings whereas a double deck would sometimes just have a top deck full of smoke and general rowdiness.

The 27 is my local Bus. Nobody in their right mind goes upstairs. That is reserved for the Junkies an P*ssheads.

I tend to sit upstairs due to the better view. I have however sat downstairs on night buses and received the gift of 21 stitches in the back of my head on one occasion and the blood of a man eating a burger all over my jeans on another. These are 2 occasions in 40 years. If I lived anywhere I could never go upstairs on a bus I'd probably make it my aim in life to move house.

I'd move back to the UK but the missus is a Dub, and all the family live here. Over here we even had a Bus Hi-jacked with passengers on it! The 56A route goes much the same way as the 27, as mentioned above.

I've been on a night Bus which was pulled over by Gardai (Irish Police) Detectives, who stormed upstairs and literally threw five scumbags down the stairs, through the exit doors into the arms of the uniformed Gardai, where they were slammed up against a garden wall, for a not too subtle search! The Gardai thanked the Driver and left the Bus. Those of us downstairs who sat there whilst all the commotion was going on upstairs just sat their agog! The Driver apologised, and explained that he had seen drug dealing taking place on his CCTV monitor and radioed base for help. Base then advised the Gardai, who then turned up to suprise the scumbags.

Looking for work ATM. The Buses are bad over here, but not as bad as the Red Line LUAS (Dublin Tram). Now that is dangerous. TBH I wouldn't recommend anybody to use that unless they are:-

A) A clued up local.
B) Have your own personal security guard.
C) A thrill seeking adventurer.
D) A junkie.
E) On your way to court. (Four Courts Stop is on this route).

Surprisingly the safest time to travel on the LUAS is late at night as security is provided on Tram by a company which employs Eastern European Heavies!
