Dorking - Croydon

I was on my way back from Brighton yesterday and decided I wanted to head into Croydon before going home. I broke my journey at Redhill and did the following:

Redhill - Dorking Deepdene - Dorking Main - Epsom - Sutton - West Croydon
returning
East Croydon - Redhill, resuming my journey back to Folkestone.

I bought an off - peak day single Redhill - Dorking Stations (£2.50) and an off peak day return Dorking Stations - Croydon Stations (£4.95). Would the latter have actually covered me for the entire trip? Southeastern journey planner shows Redhill as a valid route between Croydon - Dorking so I wondered if on starting my journey the return portion of the ticket would have covered me from Redhill - Dorking since I was stopping short at Redhill on my way back.

One mapped route between Dorking Group and Croydon Group is SD, which shows Redhill as a valid via point for the journey.

No. The outward ticket is only valid with an unused return portion. There is a good chance of a ticket stamp between Redhill and Dorking Deepdene.

Yes Dorking Stations - Croydon Stations is valid via Redhill permitted under map SD

• DORKING is part of the Dorking Group.
• EAST CROYDON is part of the Croydon Group.

Following are always permitted :

Direct trains advertised in the timetable between Dorking & East Croydon
The shortest route with a regular service which is 18.71 miles :

Dorking - Epsom - Cheam - West Croydon - Selhurst - East Croydon

Following are also permitted unless an easement prevents them :

Any route 21.71 miles or less
Mapped routes between Dorking & East Croydon

CS + LB
SD
SL + SD

Any additional routes allowed by an easement.

But you would not have been allowed to use your return portion between East Croydon & Redhill if it had been stamped between Redhill & Dorking Deepdeene.
