Which begs the question, why hasn't a busy station such as Leeds got their act together and installed the barcode readers in the gates by now?

The cynic in me suggests they're probably arguing who should pay for the readers...assuming the gates at Leeds can be upgraded with them in the first place.

So I take it these are becoming more and more common now as at Leeds Station there were tons of signs up today advising passengers with 'paper tickets' to seek out gateline staff to let them through!

What a fantastic example of (dis)joined up thinking and (un)collaborative working in the industry! Well done, DfT.

Things like these are the exact reasons the industry has an awful reputation.

Northern themselves introduced barcode tickets on the first day of the new franchise when they had gates at Leeds with no way of validating them, and no the Leeds gate line can't be upgraded as far as I know it just needs replacing

I bought some tickets using my prepaid card from a Northern guard last week, payment went through instantly so the new machines have an Internet connection.

What is the reason for these new ticket types over printing the same as ticket office?

I suspect the reason for the new ticket type is a mixture of cost (both in terms of machine and ticket stock) and weight of the machine.

I do not like the wording regarding routes and services on DORIS tickets. Whereas others say unless specified it is valid on any permitted route, DORIS tickets make no reference to permitted routes and refer the user to nationalrail.co.uk, which does not always give the full range of permitted routes. An undermining of passenger rights on its way, perhaps?

Can you give an example? I have not heard of any such problems.

Weight and size of printer required play a significant part in this choice, with cost a much lesser consideration.

The tickets produced by DORIS are to a RSP standard and will be the same as other new equipment using the same ticket stock. I do not believe that there is any anti-passenger conspiracy involved in the design.
