Dorchester Town's Ashley Vickers was sent off for tackling a pitch invader dressed in a mankini in his side's 3-1 defeat at Havant & Waterlooville.
The incident occurred with Monday's game at 1-1. Dorchester ended the game with eight men after Jake Smeeton and Kyle Critchell were also dismissed.
Vickers, 39, told the Dorset Echo: "I'm dumbfounded and speechless. I thought I was doing them a favour.
"The ref lost the game after that and he knew he had made a great error."
Player-manager Vickers had been forced to play in the Blue Square Bet South clash because his squad are missing many senior players with injury, including midfielders James Coutts and Jamie Gleeson.
"It beggars belief. Their players told the ref not to send me off and their chairman even offered to take a player off to even things up," said the Magpies boss.

"In hindsight I perhaps shouldn't have done it but hindsight is a wonderful thing. I'm sure people will crucify me for this but I have broad shoulders."

All i can say is wow just wow, Vickers tried to do the officials and stewards a favor, by tackling. This sod, and he gets sent off. Despite the protests from both sides, and the stewards. This Refs even worse than the ones on the Man united pay book.

Why is it such a bad thing? If this wasn't done on the pitch then Vickers would probably be hauled up for battery.

But it wouldn't of happened off the pitch would it?

My point was that he is technically committing an offence by doing it; if it was not done on the pitch then he is likely to be charged by doing it. Personally, I think the ref did exactly the right thing. You can't have players rugby tackling people! Pitch invasions should be dealt with by the security teams who are there to (a) stop people getting on the pitch and (b) getting them off if they do. The players are there to play football, not to be some kind of vigilante.

Yes but the stewards were obviously were unable too. Plus they were unable to play cause he was wasting time, and after Dorchester had conceded, so emotions were high

The FA are investigating the decision and are going to lift his ban, heck not even the enquirer, or his assistants know why he did it.

And he's not a player

Makes no difference. That's what the stewards are paid for. The mankini bloke could have been seriously injured by Vickers' actions.
It also makes no difference whether they were wasting playing time or not.

EDIT - I see you changed your post, but don't worry I saw it. Breaking the Stadiums CoC is a civil matter. Not criminal. And law is not a tit-for-tat thing. You can't say "Oh, he was violating public decency so I took him down'. If there is sufficient evidence, then he would be arrested and a bench of magistrates or a jury would decide whether he was guilty or not. Not some overpaid footballer.

Not sure where you're getting the FA's decision from, as the article you linked to clarly says this:
It is yet to be confirmed whether or not Dorchester will appeal against Vickers' ban.

Make your mind up! Are they overpaid or underpaid? Your first sentence directly contradicts your second!

Be somewhat sensible, the geezer was causing a scene and he was removed from it in the swiftest way possible. Why should everyone have to stand around and watch him dance so he can have his moment of stupidity.

Being scared to take action in such circumstances causes a lot of the problems we have today. The guy is a numpty who chose to run onto a football pitch in some dubious underwear, being rugby tackled was a fairly proportionate response to get the game going and even the bloke involved wasn't bothered by it.

Citizens used to be trusted to deal with minor misdemeanors themselves without having to bring law enforcement bodies into it. This could include tackling a ****. Or does a person's right to seemingly do what they want overrule that of everyone else to have a simple game of football.

Good on the guy....

They would still be out there now if he had not intervened.....

Man gets arrested, game continues, ref gets demoted for being stupid (will turn up in premership with Atwood) not that much of a issue me thinks ??

Well said. With the expected cut in police numbers, we as a society should be able to stand up for ourselves.

Back on topic, although I know my opinion would be biased, I have to say poor Vickers, he tried to do the right thing yet got bollocked. No wonder he has everyone's sympathy on this, including the opposition.
