Hello,

A question for all guards/anyone else who knows:

How do you un-lock doors on trains on 150s, 153s, 156s and 158s?

An easy to follow answer please!!! (eg press the red button then turn key)

Thanks

Depends on what you mean by "unlock". Do you mean unlock from the door being secured out of use or release to allow passengers to board.....

Open cover, insert key, press appropriate button is all you really need to know. There is more to it most likely but I'm just a mere passenger who has seen the local guards do it enough.

I do know that Selective Door Opening on 159s is only at the cab end control panels. (purely because the intermediate doors all had a sticker saying "Selective Door Opening not available at this panel" on the cover)

Basically.

Turn DKS (Door key switch) to 'ON'
Open door control panel.
Open local door with the rocker switch. (Or open slam door on 150/1)
Check train is fully accommodated on platform.
Press both 'Door open' buttons at the same time.

Hey presto doors now released.

That's for 150 + 156 not sure about 153/155/158 as I don't sign them. Although having watched other guards on 158's it seems to be broadly the same.

Yup, pretty much the same across the board, same panels on everything except 158, which are slightly different in terms of where the DKS is.

I have to ponder why the OP wants such a definitve answer, nothing sinister I do hope?! :o

I hope he's going to steal a Northern unit and drive it off a cliff.

Could I therefor tempt you with some 142 operating instructions instead?

They're so convoluted half the Guards probably still struggle! I can just imagine, hijack the unit, shut the doors up and....hold on, they've gone out of sync. Bugger!

Originally, and during my time on them, the DKS on the 142s was located inside the cab on the rear bulkhead.

On the 150s you turn the handle and then pull the door open. Simples! ;)

Well you didn't specify which doors :P.

On 150s, I have seen conductors use a panel next to doors in the middle of the train (opening it with a T key.) Is that what is meant by turn DKS?

That would be the intermediate panels; originally the doors could be operated only from either end of the train, but in order to make things a little more flexible most (if not all?) operators have added extra control panels inside the saloons. The DKS simply refers to putting a key into a slot to energise the control panel before use - for obvious reasons the buttons are not live until the panel is energised with a key, even though the panel should be locked shut.

Indeed. The 150s can vary, some have been moved, 143s it's outside the cabs, 153 outside but different at each end, 158s have one at each door inside the panel itself.

Sorry if this comes across arsey but for an interview they won't want to know that your friend knows the door procedure and he won't get extra marks for knowing. He just needs to know that the door opening / closing is part of the job

As for intermediate door panels at Northern only the 155, 158s and the electrics have them. The 14x's 150s, 156s dont (the 153s only have doors at either end anyway)

I would second that. Your friend would be very well advised to steer well clear of trying to look clever by implying he knows how go do the job already; such an attitude will lose him any chance of getting through. The knowledge that will impress a panel is a general background of the operator and/or parent company, its operations and geography, and things like the name of the MD or any significant local achievements such as community rail partnerships and so on. It's all a bit silly really if you ask me - you're applying to work for them not write a book about them - but that's what they like, a candidate who has done their homework and shown some knowledge of their potential employer. Things to absolutely avoid at all costs would most definitely include coming across as somebody who thinks they know how it all works before they've even got the job!
