It appears that whilst travelling at 70mph close to Leeds rugby ground, one of the external doors of a class 153 popped open. Nobody was hurt luckily.

Suppose it's Northern's new way of getting free air conditioning

Depends if it was reported or if the interlock circuit applies the breaks on those units.

The interlock circuit won't - but the train wire 4 circuit goes through the doors and does apply the brakes. I only ask because I hope it was reported as every repair book entry and report gets us a step closer to getting shot of all the shoddy traction.

155 didn't have them until a couple of years ago. Seen one roll away at Leeds with no driver in.

It doesn't meant the traction is shoddy as we do not know the reason for the wrong side failure of the door in question.

Let's not speculate!

Wasn't doors opening on the move the reason the 155s were grounded shortly after their introduction all those years ago?

Yes, if Wiki is to be believed. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_155

Introduction was rapid, but teething troubles soon emerged. The units were the first BR DMUs with sliding-plug automatic doors which closed to provide a smooth bodyside rather than sliding back into the bodyshell (the system used with 150s and 151s). These doors did not work properly and there were reports of them opening while the trains were in use. Consequently the fleet was taken out of use and modified, with the 156s taking over their diagrams.

Im not saying the traction is shoddy because the doors open in service (although I would be forgiven for thinking that). Im saying the traction is shoddy full stop - and I want rid (rather selfishly) :)

You're joking right?! 'No fault found' and carry on sounds more likely if your place is anything like ours! On a serious note, methinks you're stuck with Sprinters for a good few years yet chap!?

To be honest, if all that happened was the door caused the brakes to come on but no one noticed then they would just carry on. I have had brake applications coming into stations before and didn't notice the interlock light going out but would guess it was someone pulling a door open. I told the signaller it may have been a door and carried on normally.

Has happened several times before due to guards leaving DKS on & door panel open (tut-tut) usually a passenger drops the 'local' switch wondering what it does.

That's an interesting point. I'm not entirely certain of the score with a 153, but certainly on a 150 if a local switch is in the open position you won't get brake release, even if the DKS is off and the door itself is closed.

I do know someone who came into a station with a door open on a 317. Someone had pulled it open and got out before the train had stopped. The driver had no idea as an open door won't apply the brakes on a 317. It was platform staff who noticed. That's why I asked about the northern units as I wasn't sure if they apply brakes if a door opens.

A 150 I'm fairly sure will hold its brakes on if a door is causing problems during dispatch, so presumably they wil apply if a door opens (or a local door switch operates) in motion. Having said that, you might reasonably expect the same system to be in place on a 150 as on a 317, so who knows!

I too was under the impression that a 150 or 317 with a door open in traffic would break the door interlock and apply the brakes, particularly since their contemporaries (156, 318 etc) do it.

Modified 317s used on the west Anglia side do but the 317s used on the GN routes don't have door interlock wired into the brakes. 313s have been modified to apply brakes so I guess many units were built without interlock applying brakes.

Can I just say that sometimes its not a fault of the conductor that the door control panel has been opened as I was on a 156 from Manchester-Chester on Saturday and as we left Piccadilly I heard something falling down near the front of the train, it turned out that it was the off-side door control cover that kept opening on its own, I only know this as the conductor kept closing it when he got to the front of the train but every time the train either set off or came to a stop it would open again

Indeed - I have also seen this happen to various ADTranz/Bombardier trains on very rare occasions (i.e. once or twice on 377s and even more rarely on other classes, and bearing in mind I ride a huge number of Electrostars, that's not too alarming). I actually had a toilet control panel door randomly fly open in front of me on a 357, too. That was interesting...

How long have you been driving 153's?

153 doors by design occasionally pop open when trains pass them at highspeed. the brakes will apply and door open in traffic is a serious investigation. The train brakes wont release if the local door switch is in the down position even if the DKS is switched out.
Like all sprinters some are fantastic and others are a bag of nails but they are a well designed train overall.
