With all the new franchises having DOO introduction put into the contract of the franchise, how will this happen with Operators such as Northern who have no compatible DOO trains, will they pay to have Platform CCTV added onto stations?

Northern are getting some new trains. The suggestion is that DOO will be introduced only on those routes with new trains that have the necessary onboard kit.

That won't be till at least 2021 then as that's when the pacers should be gone from what I've heard rumoured?

IIRC from previous discussions platform CCTV is no longer ORR's preferred technology. The default position is that cameras will be fitted to the trains.

The main likely exception will be systems such as Crossrail, where platform edge doors rule out onboard CCTV cameras...

Crossrail will be odd in that it will have on-board monitors but platform mounted cameras. Video data will be transmitted from fixed equipment on the platforms to the trains where it will be viewed by the driver.

That system has been in use on the Hamburg U- and S-Bahnen since the 1990s, FWIW (including on the 1930s Class 471/871 stock when that was around). Seemed to work well enough.

That's what I meant really. Should probably have written cannot use onboard (bodyside) CCTV cameras, amended it now...

That is also standard on the Underground, introduced on all new stocks since the Central line was upgraded with the 1992 stock.

It is by far the safest system, allowing the driver to observe the platform train interface as the train departs, and, where fitted, before the train arrives also. I'm surprised this system isn't mandated, or at least strongly recommended for the reason of the improved visibility it provides. I suppose the reason for the industry preferring on-train mounted equipment as opposed to platform mirrors/CCTV monitors, or this solution (track to train CCTV) is the fragmented nature of the rail industry, where presumably the maintenance of the platform equipment (cameras/mirrors/cabling) would be the responsibility of Network Rail, whereas the on-board equipment would be the responsibility of the Toc.

Yes, there is the problem of divided maintenance and faulting responsibilities. There are other issues as well. A ten car 345 will have 30 doors to observe with just 6 views in the cab, to get anything like an adequate view the cameras have to be mounted quite close to the train - which also means quite close to the OHEL. So if any maintenance is required then an isolation is also required. If anything other than 345's uses the same platforms which does not have internal monitors then you will also need to retain the platform mounted monitors as well.

I didn't think about that issue, good point
