Coatbridge, the one on a sharp RH curve, is on a DOO route, it does have monitors, question is did DOO cause this incident to happen?

BTP article, today...

MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED, COATBRIDGE SUNNYSIDE STATION - APPEAL FOR WITNESSES

British Transport Police (BTP) is appealing for information after a 32-year-old man from Garrowhill, was seriously injured after being assaulted at Coatbridge Sunnyside station on Saturday 13 August 2011.

Around 23.45 hours, shortly after the 22.51 Edinburgh Waverley to Garscadden service had arrived at the station, the injured man, who was in the company of his wife, was punched by a man on the platform described as wearing a ‘beanie’ hat.

This caused him to fall between the platform and the train. He was then dragged for a short distance by the train. He was taken by ambulance to Monklands Hospital, where he is presently detained with back and leg injuries. His condition is described as being serious but stable, although his injuries are not life threatening.

The man believed to be responsible for the assault is known to have boarded the train at Edinburgh Waverley. He is thought to have been travelling with another, taller, man described as wearing a black jacket. They were last seen crossing the station car park and walking off in the direction of Sunnyside R.........

The unit on that particular service would've been a 334, which has external CCTV along its body side for DOO
purposes. It would be more helpful knowing the specifics of the incident though. Did the man fall between the platform and the train after it had started moving? Before? It is hard to comment without knowing for sure.

Driver Only Operated, i.e. no guard to despatch the train at stations.

Only straight answer we may get could be from the RAIB on this, but I've always had concerns about DOO on island platforms and sharp curves.

I hear you 185, but the DOO monitors on the platform should counter this. As does the actual bodyside DOO equipment.

If it was this case, then guards wouldn't be of any help- on modern stock they can't have a head out the window to watch for problems after all.

When I was in Scotland I noticed the DOO in cab CCTV on a 334 switches off as soon as the doors are closed or 'interlocked'. :o Ideally they shouldn't switch off until the train speed has reached 4 mph so the driver can check if anyone has fallen off / has gotten trapped or is trying to train surf :o

They can from the back cab.
Most TOCs are now frowning upon conductors/guards dispatching trains from the cab, if they can dispatch from inside the train! The main reason, they want them to be more immediatly visible to passengers, unless the train is overcrowded, and the conductor/guard has to work from the cab for their own safety!

Northern & TPE prefer back cab (Apart from Pacers, obviously), must be a different world in Southern/Scotrail land

.

Surely your question is 'Was DOO a contributary factor?' The cause was the punch from the ned

Surely the guy who punched him and knocked him between the platform and train is the issue here, not DOO?

Indeed this incident has nothing to do with DOO and everything to do with criminal behaviour.

As above, would need to see full details
However, it is quite common to see the doors close then an incident happen to which the driver is often unaware or has to stop the train

Crosshill is another such station, the rear of the train (in either direction) is difficult to observe fully
I remember seeing someone get off the back of a train (towards Mount Florida) the doors closed, this person then managed to walk into the rear carriage as it passed, knocked unconcious, and ended up on the track
The driver of the departing train did not notice, but the driver (towards Queens Park) and myself did observe this and we both assisted
