Guy comes to my counter today and asks if I know about continental rail travel...

"I have got reservations to travel in France & Spain, but I have forgotten to apply for my free coupons... Do you think that I will get picked up?"

So, he is travelling TGV Paris - Biarritz, Renfe Irun - Madrid- Malaga, Renfe Malaga - Barcelona - Perpignan. TGV Perpignan - Paris..

What do you think of his chances. Oh by the way.. he is a GWR Manager, travelling 1st Class with wife & 2 kids.... AND, travelling on Saturday, 6th August....

I saw this member of staff again today. Surprisingly he travelled throughout France & Spain by just showing his "reservations". Apparantly he did not even have a FIP card, so one wonders how he managed to get a FIP reduction on Eurostar.

I got a FIP rate on Eurostar and never once showed my FIP card. My tickets were ordered over the phone and they took it on pure trust that I was staff.

We are travelling through France, Switzerland and Italy at the moment using a combination of FIP and public tickets and free passes. Something like 18 trains in two weeks . Only one real ticket check so far - in Swizerland where he wanted FIP cards and passports

When Raileurope used to provide our continental tickets/reservations they would invariably issue a "dummy" ticket for staff travelling on free coupons (this was over & above the actual reservation coupon).

Also, some supplements issued on DB stock stated "reservation & ticket" so were in a lot of cases accepted as a ticket by on board staff.

In any case, with the exception of the internal french TGVs, free coupons would in general not be valid for the above itinerary.

This is my experience too. However, whenever I've had Eurostar tickets issued on DB stock a quick check of one's FIP card has always been a distinct possibility as one has to pass through the manual gate.
