Thanks to this site for suggesting a 'not via Darlington' ticket via Google. By splitting at York a £65 return drops to £29-60 tomorrow for a day trip.

Can I break the journey on the way out at Grosmont or on the way back? Tried various Googles and am not sure.

Thanks for instant reply! Not sure about on the way there: some suggest you can in general on off-peak day return, others don't and NR suggests calling a number - bit late now.

Looks like you can break on the way out too, if you wish:

5. Break of journey is
permitted on both outward and
return portions of Off-Peak
Day and GroupSave Day tickets
unless otherwise indicated by
a restriction shown against
the ticket's_restriction code.

Your ticket has restriction code I2 which makes no mention of a prohibition of break of journey.

Thanks, that's great. That means I can have a look round the NYMR when it's light then go into Whitby for some fish and chips and a pint before the last train back.

Yes, you can.

If break of journey is prohibited for the ticket you wish to use, then "Train Companies will make this clear in their notices and other publications" (Source: NRCoC). That is not the case here, so you're fine!

In fact the return portions of any Off Peak category ticket should always permit break of journey, with no need to refer to notices & publications.

Off Peak Day (CDS/CDR) tickets should also always permit break of journey* on both portions, again with no need to refer to notices & publications.

(* Before simplification it was simple: CDS/CDRs allowed break of journey on both portions and this was made clear. After simplification it is no longer simple. They have now been put in the same 'category' as SVS/SVRs and you are now supposed to check for the particular ticket you are using. However we received confirmation from ATOC that the changes were not in any way going to infringe our rights in this respect, and therefore a restriction would not be imposed on these tickets. However LM have introduced their own TOC-specific CDS/CDR that has this restriction, isn't "made clear in their notices and publications", but does appear in small print and whether or not it that is enforceable is a matter of some debate, especially given that a representative of LM has recommended starting short - which counts as a BOJ! - on a ticket with such a restriction on this forum!).

On a similar point, I note that some rail booking sites offer Whitby Bus (WTZ) as a destination, showing a bus service from York to Whitby direct apparently run by East Coast themselves.

Does anyone know if, for example, you could travel from Doncaster to Whitby outward via the Esk Valley line and back via the York bus on the same ticket? Given the infrequent service between Middlesboro and Whitby, this might be preferable to spending 4 hours on a train each way!

The Whitby Bus ticket is a bus add-on to the York fare and would not be valid by rail between York and Whitby.

It's not that much quicker on a bus from York: depends on how long you have to wait for train at Middlesbrough. Left York today at 0927 arrived Whitby 1208; left Whitby 1915 arrived York 2143. But a round-trip would be more interesting.

PS congratulations to TPE guards, first one on way to Middlesbrough ringing ahead to say we would be a bit late and could they hold the Whitby train; second on way back for telling obnoxious pot-head playing loud music to desist or else!
