Doncaster to Worksop any permitted route

We are travelling tomorrow from Scarborough to Worksop and with splits it comes up as the last leg as Doncaster to Worksop. The forum split site offers off peak returns for Scarborough to Doncaster (3 splits) but only offers 2 singles for the Doncaster to Worksop journeys or the off peak return via sheffield only.
There is an Doncaster to Worksop Anytime Day return via any permitted route for £20.70 (2 adults with 2TG RC) and we want to travel to Worksop via Retford and back via Sheffield are we ok to use the Any permitted route ticket to make the journey this way. Thanks

Doncaster to Worksop "Any Permitted" tickets are, in principle, only valid via Retford - going via Sheffield doesn't involve a direct train, and it's more than 3 miles longer than the shortest route. It's also not a 'mapped' route under the Routeing Guide (only via Worksop is mapped).

However there is a "via Sheffield" fare, which is cheaper than the "Any Permitted" fare. The Routeing Guide states that:

You may only use all the permitted routes if the fare is unrouted or the route is described as "any permitted". An "any permitted" ticket cannot be used for travel on a route not listed in the Routeing Guide for which a higher priced route specific fare exists. It can be used on any route not listed in the Routeing Guide for which a lower priced route specific fare exists.

Therefore you are allowed to travel via Sheffield on an Any Permitted ticket. However, the above rule isn't reflected in the electronic version of the Routeing Guide which ticket retailers use, and therefore they are unable to offer the Any Permitted fare for journeys via Sheffield.

Yes took me a couple of reads but makes sense, great that we are allowed to go via Sheffield,

We had planned to go via Sheffield both ways but we are trying to save time on our way to Worksop so that is our reason for going via Retford but as we are travelling via Hull both ways we need to go via Sheffield on the way back otherwise we cant make the last train to Scarborough at 1857.

Fares from Worksop to Doncaster and beyond to York and Newcastle can be very confusing. My experience of trying to find the correct fares from stations such as Mansfield and Hucknall on the Robin Hood Line, via Worksop, have shown many complications. It’s very difficult to work out why there is a higher priced “via Sheffield” Off Peak Return fare when as far as I can see the lower priced “any permitted“ fare will allow travel via Sheffield. The any permitted ticket will even allow you to travel from Mansfield via Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield. The “any permitted” ticket at one time would not allow travel via the shorter Worksop and Sheffield route, but according to the forums ticket selling site it now does. When the TVMs at Robin Hood Line stations come up with “any permitted” and a higher priced ”via Sheffield” ticket, I wonder how many people buy the higher priced “via Sheffield” ticket when they don’t actually need it. I told you it was complicated and confusing!

Problems are only going to increase from the timetable change in December, when connections at Retford become so poor that most people will want to travel via Sheffield. I think the frequent buses from outside Worksop Station to Doncaster already get most of the Worksop to Doncaster local travel but the loss of reasonable connections at Retford will not help with rail travel.
