Doncaster to St. Bees - Ticket Split Points?

Hi all,

On 31 May, I want to travel from Doncaster to St Bees (single).

A standard 16-25 single is around the £32 mark, so I've looked at splitting.

Here's what I've got so far:

Doncaster - Manchester Picc = £4.60
Manchester Picc - Barrow = £4.60
Barrow to St. Bees = £6.55

TOTAL: £15.75

----

OR - I can go first class on the Doncaster to Barrow bit (same splits) which comes to £22.35.

Any advance on that, either standard or first class?

You are comparing a flexible single ticket with advance tickets,

If you book early enough through advance tickets are available
Doncaster - St Bees advance single £7-25 (with railcard)
11 August
Dep 0900 arr 1403 chaging at Leeds & Carlisle


However there are no through tickets available on 31 May, there is a advance fare of £7-25 available to Whitehaven on 0751 from Doncaster
add on £1-20 for Whitehaven - St Bees gives a total of £8-45

In my experience first class on TransPennine Tickets isn't worth the cost. It's not significantly nicer. Depending what time you are travelling you may find the train out of Man Picc a bit busy up to Preston, but should be no trouble with a booked seat. After that the Preston>Barrow leg is generally empty enough for there to be little benefit for first class. I guess you could get a free coffee or two in 1st, but you'll be doing well to drink £7 worth given how infrequent the trolly service is!

I have booked the Donny-Whitehaven option. Dirt cheap and I get the Settle-Carlisle thrown in for good measure! Excellent!
