If you get them when they go on sale you can get very cheap deals and avoid the boring EMT route.

I guess the cheapest may be an EMT advance to Sheffield, then a cheap as chips Sheffield to Donny, but it's not what I'd choose!

I have never travelled Hull Trains before... but wouldn't mind the free internet on EC though.

I'd describe them as better than Voyagers, fairly bland and basic, not bad for an underfloor engine DMU. Nothing interesting/exciting. Given the unreliability of them, expect it to fail and not reach above 80mph and be looped everywhere, and then you'll be pleasantly surprised if your journey goes without incident

What's Hull Trains 180's like?

I have never travelled Hull Trains before... but wouldn't mind the free internet on EC though.

I think I've had 3 180s ever. One was between London and Reading, unavoidable due to the people I was with otherwise I'd have avoided it for a HST (on the same day that I got my only HST to Bournemouth, which was a great surprise as it was mostly Vomiters in 2003), another one from Oxford to London (again bad luck, but if I left it any later I'd be risking missing the last train from London) and another from London to Slough. Hopefully I won't ever catch another one but sadly a substitution for a HST is bound to occur on Grand Central at some point.

My last southbound journey from York was on a southbound 180 on a sunday afternoon.
It was standing room only, I was fortunate in getting a flip up seat in the vestible. Performance of the 180 was more than sufficent to meat the undemanding scheduling on what is now very much a secondary inter city route.

Used two 180s on Hull Trains last week. Both where more than adequate, reasonably quiet, smooth & spot on time.

I've already said the recommended route! I'd go via London! If you want to know what tickets to buy, the cheapest EC fares are available from King's Cross only. So buy one of them. Get them now they are on sale. As for East Anglia, check the price to Liverpool St and compare it with Finsbury Park. It may be worth buying to Finsbury Pk to get the Underground included. Allow at least 1 hour to change in London. Yes it can be done in a lot less, but you won't be covered in the event of delays if you leave it too tight.
