Doncaster to Chapel-en-le Frith options

Hi All,

I want to do a Doncaster to Chapel-en-le-Frith day return in the near future.

I'm not impressed with the fares and even splitting (that seem to rely on Advances) doesn't look good.

So...I had a thought today of whether I could combine a SY Connect+ with a Derbyshire Wayfarer. Initial searches show that this could work and be good value (£10.70 for SYC+ and £16 for DW).

Have I got this right please and will the validities cover my whole journey?

Also, can I get a Derbyshire Wayfarer online (I use the Travel SY app for the SY Connect+).

@ricoblade. Don't think the Derbyshire Wayfarer option works unless you're planning on schlepping between New Mills Central and New Mills Newtown stations.

Alternatively, you could consider an Off Peak Return from Doncaster to/from Disley (= £25.80) (route "via Sheffield") plus you'd also need a £6.70 Off Peak Day Return from Disley to/from Chapel-en-le-Frith. That combination slightly undercuts the through fare of £34.40.

A Derbyshire Wayfarer isn't valid for rail journeys via Greater Manchester stations. It might be simpler/quicker to take a train from Doncaster to Chinley, changing at Sheffield (for which the off peak return is quoted as £15-80) and then a taxi from Chinley to Chapel (approximate price £10 each way).

There is a limited bus service from Chinley station to Chapel (High Peak 190), but it only runs 7 times a day on Mon-Sat and may not connect well with the hourly train service at Chinley. There is also a limited bus service (High Peak 62) from Edale station to Chapel, but it only runs 3 times daily. On Sundays, Hulley's route 257c provides a 2-hourly bus service from Bamford station to Chapel.

Bear in mind that Chapel station is well over 1 mile's walk from the town centre.

How about an Off Peak Day Return from Doncaster to/from Grindleford (route "via Sheffield") at £9.50 in combination with a GM Wayfarer at £16.90? Assume that can be used on non-stop trains through Grindleford?

That is what I was going to suggest, certainly valid on the fast services. The GM Wayfarer can be bought from any PayPoint outlet, although you might need to talk them though how to find it (say you want a transport ticket, then they need to select TfGM Wayfarer)

Although as the OP talked about the SYConnect I assume they would need to factor in the cost of getting to Doncaster station as well.

I don’t think the train inclusive version of the Derbyshire Wayfarer can be bought online. You can get it from the Northern ticket machines at Doncaster.

Thanks all - some good options to ponder, meant to say I’ll have to travel out in the peak (geddit?) to make it work.

I don't need to be near the centre of Chapel as I'll be walking the other way up onto Combs Moss.

I can make the New Mills transfer work on the outbound but the timings on the return are not good, you basically lose an hour.
