Doncaster station upgrade

Hi Folks
a few years ago I heard that they were upgrading the approaches and platforms at/around Doncaster, its been a long time since I was in that area has anything happened or was it pie in the sky stuff

This sort of stuff does take quite a few years to happen, but there are references within the CP5 enhancement plans to Doncaster alterations still in the pipeline. No explicit date for it to be done though.

It is under the heading "East Coast Connectivity Fund", page 18:

The East Coast Programmes Board has so far identified the following candidate schemes:
 Peterborough – grade separated access to the GN/GE line;
 Peterborough – upgrade the Down slow line between Fletton to Peterborough;
 Peterborough – station layout enhancements;
 Doncaster – east side enhancements;
 Doncaster – additional platform;
 York – station north throat enhancements; and
 Northallerton to Newcastle – additional freight loops.

Development and implementation of infrastructure enhancements between King’s Cross and Doncaster will be developed in conjunction with the ECML ERTMS programme.

So it isn't really 'pie in the sky' - it just takes a long time to work its way through the mass of other work going on...

Well, depending on how long ago you read about enhancements, the subway now has lifts to all platforms and toilets have been improved on platforms 1/3. Retail units now fill the space where the original BR booking hall was, this is the main pedestrian route to/from the adjacent Bus Interchange, the Frenchgate Shopping Centre and thus access to the Town Centre. New bike racks/shelters have been placed near the station front.

Additional platforms (on the west side / goods lines area) would definitely reduce delays to XC and Northern services to/ from Sheffield, as congestion caused by slightly late running East Coast Kings Cross to York stoppers, Newcastle/Edinburgh and Leeds services can result in XC Reading to Newcastle services taking 5 - 10 minutes to travel the last half mile into a platform. Sheffield to Hull services are often subjected to similar waits, though they can use platform 3 more easily. However this work would be quite expensive as the space available is limited.

Would Doncaster ever be a candidate for a Reading-like rebuild as it does serve as the cross roads for two rail arteries as well as the termination station for local services? If the welwyn viaducts and tunnels get doubled wouldn't the next place to cause capacity issues be Doncaster and all it's crossing moves?

Doncaster won't be as busy post HS2 so I'd say not
