My mate has to go from Donny to London at short notice today. It will be at an off-peak time, but he's not sure when. He then wants to go to Nottingham from London this Saturday and return to Donny from Nottingham on Monday.

An off peak return costs £132. Would he be able to use this back from St Pancras to Nottingham, break his journey, and then come back to Doncaster? Map SY implies he can do this as long as he comes back through Sheffield rather than Grantham. Or is the break of journey too long? Or is he doubling back from Nottingham?

Or he could get a single from Donny to London for £78.80; perhaps cheaper if he gets GCR or Hull (if they are running) then look for advances back.

Any ideas?

Over 25, no railcards.

Is there a reason he can't use the £79.80 Doncaster-London (Rte Any Permitted) Super Off Peak Return?
Is there a reason he can't use the St Pancras-Nottingham service?

I don't know of a reason that he can't break his return journey over a couple of nights within the validity of the return portion, but I do know some guards think people can't.

There's no double back involved when going from St Pancras to Sheffield via Nottingham (except for one or two services per day). The regular Nottingham to Sheffield services do leave Nottingham the same way the London train came in but they turn off before the first station (Beeston) so you don't pass through any station more than once.

Is it only me who gets confused when the destination is stated before the origin? Anyway I've got my head round it now.

Is he travelling at at a time the Super Off Peak Return is not valid?

A (Super) Off Peak Return is valid to return within one month. Break of journey is always allowed on the Return portion* so that's fine.

It's around £45-50 on Hull Trains or Grand Central, and this can be purchased on board at no extra cost (indeed HT/GC encourage you to do so, so that they get all the commission rather than EC, which seems only fair to me! It's also quite satisfying to say to the gateline staff "I'm getting Grand Central" and be let through :))
