Been for a drive this week and noticed that there was still people watching the crossings.

They will be monitoring them, just to make sure they are working correctly, I bet they monitor them for quite a few months. He will be a brave man who signs them off as fit for purpose and use as planned.
Just think of the cost to train delays on East Coast mainline if they don,t work as planned?
Lets wait and see how successful they are and if they save the cost of the money as against employing staff to man them.

Or they may still be under local crossing clear mode, which is similar to local conteol
