Doncaster - Durham Split

Hi all,

I'm travelling Doncaster to Durham tomorrow. I only need a single. A through ticket is £34.85 off-peak (16-25 railcard), but by splitting at York and Darlington, I can get it for: £9.90 + £14.65 + £3.95 = £28.50. Is it possible to get it any cheaper? trainscanbecheaper.info gives odd results on this route, for some reason.

I see what you mean about trainscanbecheaper - I certainly can't get a booking site to offer me the fares to Redcar and stations on the Saltburn line that trainscanbecheaper are suggesting for splits.

Mid morning tomorrow there are Doncaster-Durham Advances at £27 (so just under £18 with your railcard) if you know when you want to travel and book soon. And if you buy separate Doncaster-York and York-Durham Advances you can do it for even less.

If not using Advances, you'd save an extra £3.50 by also splitting at Northallerton, but would have to make sure you were on a train that called there.

Have you tried splitting at Northallerton instead of Darlington?

I think it comes out as: £9.90 + £7.60 + £7.25 = £24.75

Obviously you'll need to travel on one of the trains which calls at Northallerton.

If you persist with trainscanbecheaper by excluding unwanted stations, the first split that it offers for a journey that does not deviate from the East Coast Mainline is the split suggested by transmanche.

Yeah - we just discovered a bug on trainscanbecheaper where it was offering PRIV fares where the fare came from the Non Derivable table (rather than the more usual derivable fares table). We're rebuilding the tables now to fix it.
