Are there any domestic boats in Yorkshire or near? I'd quite like to take my little boy on one tbh

Racking my brain, and all I can think of is Peasholme Park in Scarborough and I'm not sure that goes between two points. No estuaries is the reason: Esk at Whitby has the swing bridge; Hull-New Holland replaced by a rather bigger one and is half in Lincolnshire anyway.

Do the occasional (expensive) sailings from Liverpool up the Manchester Ship Canal to the Salford Quays complex (and vce-versa) that takes six hours count on this thread ?

I'm wondering about the Thames crossings.

One of the criteria for my walk round the coast is to cross rivers, harbours and estuaries at the point nearest the sea by whatever means available. I will be picking up the walk again later this year from Herne Bay, heading west, and I think the first crossing is Gravesend to Tilbury. Can anyone conform that or suggest an earlier one.

These are completely seperate companies with no ticketing cooperation- yes


Hmm, tricky. Brittany Ferries and Condor do have partnership agreements (especially the joint-operated Cherbourg-Poole route) and it is possible to get tickets that are Condor one way, Brittany Ferries the other.

Although this is no more. This summer season there is no such partnership. Can't help feeling that the not great reliability of the Condor vessels, as well as the re-introduction of Barfleur (3rd time lucky!) on Poole - Cherbourg play roles in this.

Edit: Just seen RichW's post, he's basically put everything I have. That'll teach me a lesson to read the whole thread first than getting all excited when I think I can contribute

Other than the Woolwich ferry and Northlink out of Aberdeen, are there any other domestic car ferry services on the eastern side of Great Britain? There are damn few islands- any remaining estuary ferries?

However its a foot passenger only ferry, I never read your question correctly!

No, there are no regular cross-Thames ferries east of Tilbury/Gravesend. Very occasional sailings from the end of Southend pier to places in Kent.

Further West, until a few years ago, there was a ferry, for Ford's workers only, between Belvedere and Dagenham, but that's no more in Ford's depleted state.

Further West still, there's a foot-ferry across the Thames somewhere near Shepperton.

I can't immediately think of any more car ferries entirely within the UK, but if you count chain ferries among their number, the one at Reedham Ferry, in Norfolk (west of Reedham itself) springs to mind

Can I throw in the Canary wharf pier-Hilton Hotel Rotherhithe shuttle boat on the Thames which is daily all year round. Hammertons foot ferry from Ham house Richmond across to to Marble Hill house -seasonal and the Hampton-Moulsey foot ferry and the Shepperton one.
