Network Rail may also be able to assist if the dog has been removed from the track by one of their staff, whether or not it is alive. Sometimes removal is needed because of possible damage if they get knocked onto a piece of critical infrastructure such as points, or caught up in a train's equipment; severe delays have happened in the past even due to smaller animals, such as pheasants, striking trains; but on the other hand it may have been caught and sent to a vet or kennel.
It probably will have been reported. Dogs on the track tend to get reported for a few reason. Unlike most animals of similar size which will go unreported if they are hit, as pets, it can be quite upsetting for some people. As well as that there is a chance that a dog running loose will have a person looking for it who may also be on the line.

I nearly hit a guy once on a FP crossing who went after their dog, it was a very close call and a good job I was travelling up gradient at the time or I would have killed him. (the person that is) the dog was well gone by the time the guy ran in front of me!

I always report them because seeing them really upsets me. I usually say that it's visible to passengers and they're upset just to make sure they send someone to move them.
Not sure what they do with the information though other than sending someone to move said animal.
I'll probably get slated for this but I'm just being honest. I've hit a human (suicide) and I've hit a Staffy and the dog upset me considerably more.
