Dogs on Rail Replacement Buses

Hi,

Has anyone any experience on how willing the bus drivers are to accept dogs on rail replacement buses?

I'm staying at Askam for a couple of weeks, and with the Arnside viaduct closed, it's either go via Carlisle (which seems rather an excessive diversion) or use the bus between Oxenholme and Grange over Sands or Barrow in Furness.

By the way, does anyone know of a dog-friendly pub near the station in Carlisle that serves decent real ale?

It depends on the bus operator. In Hereford we have ones that do and ones that don't.

Merseyrail RR buses (Arriva) do not permit bikes, dogs or large items of luggage. Prams have to be folded to be carried.

Section 49 permits this:

49. Restrictions
Any Train Company may (notwithstanding the terms set out in Conditions 46 to 48 and
Appendix B) refuse to accept an item of luggage, an article, an animal or a cycle if, in the
opinion of its staff:
(a) it may cause injury, inconvenience or a nuisance or it may cause damage to
property;
(b) there is not enough room for it;
(c) the loading or unloading may cause delay to trains; or
(d) it is not carried or packaged in a suitable manner.

Any Train Company’s staff may refuse to accept an item of luggage, an article, an animal
or a cycle even if it has been conveyed by train in the past. This Condition applies from the
start of your journey and also if you need to change trains. Other terms, conditions and
restrictions are set out in Appendix

They'll have to use their own legs then

Many of the replacement transport operators are small private firms which don't want dogs on their coach/bus.

However, you might be able to sneak a smallish dog on!

But that is with a German Sheppard X (part Great Dane), so he's easy to sneak on

I have received a reply to a query I sent to FTPE (who are responsible for the replacement buses in this case). They have told me to report to the "replacement service Coordinator" at the origin station and he/she will check if I can take the dog on the bus.

If I cannot, "a member of staff at the station will arrange for a taxi to take you to your destination"

I believe the "replacement service Coordinator" might have a quiet word with the driver in this case!

Most replacement transport, regardless of TOC, seems to be organised by First nowadays (apart from certain TOCs like SWT who do their own). They seem to be increasingly using FirstGroup buses I have noticed - which will definitely let dogs on!

When I first saw that this thread was about "Dogs on rail replacement buses", my first thought was to suggest a big bucket of cold water
