Does using off peak returns in this way break any rules?

I currently have an off peak return from A to B of which I've used the outbound portion and is validdfor 1 month for the return. If I now buy another off peak return to use tomorrow from B to A and use the outbound portions ,Am I then free to use both return portions to break the journey overnight from A to B and back on B to A. Ticket wise this seems perfectly fine but i just don't want to break the rules especially as I'll be doing this regularly as it is a route where season tickets aren't available and i often need to stay overnight en route

It is impossible to advise entirely accurately without knowing what exactly A and B are.

That said, almost all Off Peak Returns allow break of journey on the return portion. This usually includes both same day and overnight.

Unless the Off Peak Returns carry the restriction code 8A this is permissible, yes.

The one thing you can't do is use the return and then the outward. You can discard the outward and use only the return if you wish, though. In some cases it may make sense to do this if an overnight break is required both ways given the small price difference between singles and returns, though also look at whether splits may be cheaper than doing this.
