See http://www.2d53.co.uk/colwynbay/A55.htm for images and details of the work undertaken around Colwyn Bay to thread the A55 in.

These photographs are very good and show the work very well. I visited the project about this time and was given a tour of the works by the Project Engineer.

The new track work was places on a deep layer of ballast and a carpet of stone beneath this top ballast spread the axle load from the trains down onto a grid pattern of reinforced concrete piles. These piles took the load down to solid ground as the overlying strata was weak.

A very interesting project.

There may be areas round the Midlands where they don't tilt, but that won't exclude them from tilting elsewhere, any faults aside.

I believe the line between Stafford and Wolves may be one of the few places where XC can do 125mph on Virgin's territory, as I think that line is 125 non-EPS

Im pretty sure they can but the problem is, for XC and VT voyagers there is not enough time to get up to 125 before they have to brake for Wolverhampton.

There is plenty, 390s are timed at 8 and a Voyager at 8½ between Stafford Trent Valley and Bushbury.

Oh right. The amount of times that i have done that stretch of track, and not released that i was going 125 it always seemed slower than that.

A Voyager really need all its engines powering to reach 125 along there but if they are it'll do it easily enough.

The A55 approaching the Glan Conwy junction sits on a concrete raft on piles because of the soft ground. The piles are at sufficiently close intervals that the raft is of unreinforced concrete.

Thank you very much for sharing that.

I am slightly confused by the Single/Double Track Junction in the picture at:-

http://www.2d53.co.uk/colwynbay/sx3.jpg

That presumably was a temporary feature, but it looks permanent.

Quite temporary. I presume they put in a pair of such junctions to connect both new lines to the existing up line during construction. There certainly wasn't any pointwork kept between Llandudno Junction and the emergemcy ground frame at Llanddulas. Signals in the Colwyn Bay area are automatic too (aiui).

The speed is MU125 so yes, they certainly can do 125 with no tilt.

You are absolutely right - I can recall it now.

It was a deep, compacted dry-lean, un-reinforced concrete raft which was supported by the grid of piles.

Did the original trackbed have any special measures to deal with the poor ground I wonder?
