Only for freight and the occasional stabling of Northern units. Everything else should stop at Sheffield and use one of the platforms.

I saw a Virgin Cross Country Class 47 removing a coach from it's train and depositing it in one of the centre roads some time during late 2001/early 2002. I presume the coach must have had a wheel set problem or something.

Here's a sight for sore eyes using the centre roads at Sheffield in 1984. 45137 The Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment (T.A.) stands in platform 2 with the 06:45 York > Portsmouth Harbour, while 40044 with a BSK/CK whistles away in one of the centre roads.

<sigh>

Seen freights, failed DMUs (TPE 170 other month) and network rail trains pass through that is all. They are mainly used for stabling of northern units overnight/engineering work.

On a Sunday it seems to be packed with Norther nnints. Have a look at my Flickr stream ( I cant do you a link at work) and see some hardcore (!) photos of Pacer and Sprinter stabling action! :lol:

They do seem to be used for stabling rather than running through. I've seen the RHTT sitting them, and the occasional light engine that is running through, but held for a while at the signals. Any freights seem to go through the platform roads, I would imagine the speed limit is higher on them.

Those were the days...........

I used to go to Sheffield station as a kid in the late 70s early 80s. Always used to get a mid-late evening train back to Rotherham. Usually a Peak on corridor mk1s forming a Paignton to Leeds train.....

I digress.....:sad:

If it's used for Stabling how do the drivers get off? Can't be too safe climbing down in the middle of running lines and having to hop up a platform?

There'll be a dedicated walking route to the offices at the south end of the station, but most platforms have a ramp on them. You often see staff walking from the end of platform 2c to get to the carriage sidings.

Stabling of stock and the safe access for staff to the centre sidings is catered for in the local instructions for Sheffield station.
