Dockside Railways

Barry Docks is still rail served. There is a train down there pretty much everyday but as other people have said, containers are offloaded to the dockside before onward transportation as seen below......

A few that i know off, Devonport Dockyard still has access to the Plymouth - Saltash line (pops out I think just before Weston Mill Viaduct, albeit, rarely used) however there is still a working, internal rail system within the dockyard. Theres a book written about the history here:

RN Armaments Depot at Ernesettle has again it's own internal railway line for moving munitions, but due to the nature of the site, little is known as to how far the line runs. Rumours suggest that the line runs through blast doors into the tunnels but not able to prove it. This site connects to the Plymouth - Gunnislake line. It's normally protected by a gate and access is via a set of points called "Ernesettle Junction" There is currently no regular freight service entering the site. The line is accessible on foot as it runs along the River Tamar and at low tide there is nothing protecting the line, so i may be able to get some pictures if anyone is interested (Wont obviously be able to get to the RNAD site though)

Don't know what they do at Grimsby nowadays, but I don't know whether there are lines in use. Trackwork or the remnants of are everywhere at the dockside though.

I think the Bristol Harbour Railway is still connected to the Portishead Branch at Ashton Gate.

I'm afraid the link to the national network at Ashton Junction was taken out a number of years ago, possibly when the Portishead branch to Royal Portbury Dock reopened. Even if it were still there, I doubt anything would be able to pass over Ashton Swing Bridge without ending up and the bottom on the New Cut along with the rest of the bridge!

Still, take yourself via google maps to Cumberland Road, Bristol, and explore either end. Quite interesting!

I've just had a quick play with Google Maps.

Falmouth and Kyle of Lochalsh both seem to retain railway lines adjacent to wharves.

Falmouth and Kyle of Lochalsh both seem to retain railway lines adjacent to wharves.

While the station at Kyle pokes out into Loch Alsh and is surounded on 3 sides by the harbour, the lines are only there for the station. It would not take much to make them available to the harbur, I can't really see an economic case for it to happen.

There is still a line down to Regents Quay/Waterloo Quay in Aberdeen, although like many other examples the product is moved ashore and stored first, before being loaded onto train.
