Is south side, 27R or 27L?. Fantastic shots btw. Have you tryed Mythral Avenue?

Southside is 27L.

The park/field place by Myrtle Avenue is the best spot for spotting at heathrow

Southside is 27L but those shots are from the Esso garage at the West end of the perimeter road, it can be accessed by bus from Hatton Cross and T4 with a walk from the cargo centre.

It is best in the afternoons from late september to mid march, the light can be sublime in the winter months.

What about 23?

I remember not too many years ago when the wind was really strong and from the right direction they would have to take off from 27R and land on 23, the landing lights for runway 23 and the ILS equipment is gone now so it is only a memory!

I remember not too many years ago when the wind was really strong and from the right direction they would have to take off from 27R and land on 23, the landing lights for runway 23 and the ILS equipment is gone now so it is only a memory!

Yep the old crosswind runway has been decommissioned quite some years now with modern aircraft technology its no longer required, quite good nowadays watching the planes crabbing into land and giving it full rudder just before touchdown!!

In its last period of usage it was take-off only, and props only. The authorities had to of course paint the Northolt and Southall gas holders as pilots had been known to mistake the latter for the former when using 23 to land....a PanAm and Lufthansa 707 landed at Northolt by mistake because of the confusion!

Occasionally the wind would shift and 23 aircraft would veer away and then do a sharp turn over Hounslow West to land on 28L. Or a 'plane would be shifted from 28R to 28L about two miles out, right over our house! The Outer Marker for 28L I think it was, was an aerial on top of a brick box in the school's sports field in Wood Lane, Isleworth. Never did find where the other Outer Marker was!

Have seen 747's land on it in the late 80's early 90's,

one plane that couldn't was concorde.
