Do you have a regular train?

As per the title - do you tend to get the same train every day and if so why? Do you know other 'regulars' by sight, or even to talk to?

Mine are the 0719 into town (before the trains get too crowded, sometimes even get a seat) and the 1651 out of town (can always get a seat, but tends to be held at a red signal most days).

I work a 12-week roster so not at all, but when I get the 0442 train in I more often than not see a Chiltern driver with a bike who I give a nod to when we notice each other!

If going to London the 0713 ish (it varies from timetable to timetable a minute here and there) off Bletchley. But not every day.

I recognise others, but there isn't really a community on it. Earlyish LM trains tend to follow the rule of "the whole train is the quiet coach, and woe betide anyone who doesn't respect that".

Coming home I'm not consistent enough to join a "club train".

I was however once a regular on the early Luton-Geneva easyJet flights on a Monday and back on the late Thursday evening for the best part of 2 and a bit years. I did get recognised by crews quite often, particularly as 11A was near always my seat, and woe betide anyone nicking it!

Being able to work flexi time means I don't have a regular train myself. I imagine that makes a difference.

Also living with a partner / wife and / or having kids might make some people's journeys more set, assuming they don't work shifts that is or do lots of overtime. I'm single so less commitments so to speak. I'd rather have the above commitments might you.

My father use to regularly get into the office for 8am and leave it at 4, so he'd be able to see us before bedtime. I don't knoe which trains he caught but I do know that after a time he felt first class wasn't worth the additional cost, for what you got, so he went back to standard class once more. This being the days of slam door rolling stock to London Bridge on the Brighton mainline.

I like the 444 rolling stock myself so I use to try and catch that, less do these days. There was less of it in Guildford however at some of the times I'd be travelling and it was very popular before it even reached Guildford. I had more chance to get a seat on such rolling stock in the evening however. Also if I want to ever change at Clapham Junction or when I use to work in Harrow and Wealdstone, I will / would try to catch the 6.31 or 6.53. So much nice than leaving later than that and having to cross central London or catch a slow train all the way to Clapham Junction. A slow train with no loos as well! So doubly not as good. Of course it meant I ended up crossing central London in the evening. Still if I got the 18.15 I could enjoy a plug socket and table in standard class and a non stop trip down the Guildford New Line, on most occasions!

I belong to a social club and at a new members event one, one person recognised me from communting. I have face blindness myself so unless I know the person well or speak to them regularly, I'm unlikely to notice them or remember if I'd seen them before. So whilst I'm sure the trains I catch have some regulars, I can't say I've ever noticed them!

Yes, I always have had. One of the joys of a 9-5 working day.

When I commuted into Euston from Apsley it was the 0758 or the 0814 (I always preferred the 0814 as it was pretty much empty at Apsley) and the 1730 back. And when I moved up the road it was the 0755 or the 0803 from Hemel (again, preferred the later one as it was quieter) and the 1730 back home. The trains were too busy for it to be a "club" but some faces were the same every day.

I get the same Metro every morning and a fair few of the faces are the same. Couldn't tell you who they were mind.

What a coincidence! Mine is also the 0719.

There is a woman employed by ATOS who always seems to be on it before me, in the front portion. I tend to join the rear portion as it's much quieter, but if running late I would go in the front and I remember seeing her every time recently.

The joys of the self employed world (note a hint of sarcasm when mentioning joys) mean no regular dayley train but I am a creature of habbit when traveling mid/long distance with my 2 early trains of choice being the 06:52x Edinburgh for the West and less regularly the 06:06 down the East. The Virgin service in particular always seams to have a regular few who are often like me to be found fighting for first go at the bacon rolls at the shop.
Untill the May timetable this was a double voyager and so 2 catering crews, many of who worked it regularly. Havnt used it since its recent change to a 390 but no doubt crewing will now be slightly altered, as will the ability to go to sleap without an engine underneath one!

I used to make regular out and back bus journeys on a Friday and Saturday and was always on the same early Friday turn out of town and that did have a sort of a club atmosphere with various workers and a load of drivers traveling pass back to depot and another lot starting their shifts.
Saturday homeward was always the same time and usually the same driver around about 16:15 and for years the same 4 schoolgirls who naturally graduated to adults would get on and ride about 5 miles into the country and get off. I found out just before I stopped using the service at that time that they were attending a religious meeting on a farm but youd never have guessed it!

If I'm working a 'normal' day then it's the 0700 New Mills Central to Piccadilly. Same people every day, including a guy with a bike who is always eating an apple whilst we wait for the inbound service. Said apple is always lobbed into the bushes above platform 2 before he gets on. Return working is the 1613 from Deansgate to Disley, then a run/walk back home.

If it's a long day then it's the 0649 Disley to Deansgate, again with the same regulars (including one woman who only appears to have one pair of shoes, which I find oddly annoying), before the 1813 return. Less by way of regulars on the return I find.

I've not been on it for a while, but I used to be on 1C06 1742 Anderston to Carstairs on an almost daily basis. It was usually full of the same people sitting in the same seats.

When I used to commute between Wycombe and Gerrards cross I used to get the 0810 or 0818 there then 1620 or 1645 back

1805 from Euston
1821 from Euston

I do sometimes take LO trains , but they take forever , and you get overtaken by 2-3 LM services along the way

As my job is generally non static, i am working all over the place, if i use public transport i will sometimes start at the same time of day from Whitwell or Worksop, i have done the 0636 many times which allows a nice breakfast at Worksop in the tedious wait, so i see more regulars in the cafe / platform than on the train there i guess. However i do do some short term commuting from time to time. A couple of years back i was doing a regular trip in from near Waterloo to Abbey Road Studios, by fairly regularly i mean 3 or 4 days per week, 3 weeks in 4 for a few months, i had found a regular place to stay near there, id be on a fairly early Jubilee Line train up to St John's Wood. I would see the same elderly couple almost every morning, they would get on at Waterloo, and get off at St John's Wood the same as me, i wouldn't be exactly the same time either, some days i would be a couple of trains later, but i seemed to magically bump into them almost every day. A few weeks in i decided to go up the Bakerloo Line to Maida Vale instead, i liked that journey, it took a bit longer and the walk to the studio is longer but i like the 1972 stock and it seemed les busy, a few days afterwards i saw the same couple on the Bakerloo line, it turns out they were both quite poorly and had regular visits to the Hospital near by for treatment and that morning the Jubilee Line had severe delays so they had gone the other way. I went back to using the Jubilee Line after that and saw them quite regularly at that time of morning. I used the line a few months back at that time of morning, although not from Waterloo and saw the gentleman sat on there on his own, he got off at St John's Wood, it was quite upsetting, the things that go through your head at that point. I said hello, it turns out his wife was staying in hospital after having surgery and was doing well, much to my relief.

Before retirement I commuted for many years between Tonbridge and Waterloo East catching the 0724 from Tonbridge which stopped only at Sevenoaks then fast to Waterloo East. Returned in the evening on the 1628 Waterloo East- Tonbridge which also stopped only at Sevenoaks.
There were so many different permutations of routing that when one route was blocked due to an incident then our train was diverted via another route.
Some examples were.
Main line direct via Hither Green and Orpington.
Main Line via Hither Green, Chislehurst spur, Swanley, Bat & Ball to Sevenoaks.
Via Lewisham (or Parks Bridge Jn spur), New Beckenham, Beckenham Jn, Orpington ( or via Swanley, Bat & Ball) to Sevenoaks.
Via London Bridge, East Croydon, Redhill to Tonbridge (missed Sevenoaks) but got me to Tonbridge.
Once did Tonbridge, Paddock Wood, Maidstone West, Strood, Gravesend, Sidcup, Hither Green to London Bridge.
Once from Waterloo East, then to Cannon Street(reverse) to London Bridge then main line.
I think I must have done all the slow lines, fast lines and most of the crossovers in between...!

When I work in London (usually a couple of times a week) I almost always get the 0736 from Stevenage, rear carriage of a 12-car non-stop to Kings Cross for a better chance of a seat (although I rarely manage to get one)

I agree - commuter trains are far more civilised than their off-peak equivalents.

My regular train in the morning is the morning shed setup shunt at Crown Point, it the afternoon its the afternoon shunt to clear the sheds.

When I go to London I normally get the 0924 from a Twyford.

From Paddington I get the 1706 on weekdays and 1721 at weekends (changing at Slough)

I'm fairly regular on the 0602/0708 TPE services from Newcastle to York/Leeds, generally quite cheap and you do see the odd couple of regulars though it's mainly people headed for long distance journeys.

I used to be a regular on the 2109 York to Newcastle on most Saturdays until it progressively turned into some sort of loony bin full of drunks puking up all over the aisles. I ended up switching to the 2048 XC.
