Do you do plane haulage?

Hello all,

I'm interested if it's just me that does this or not! I've been doing the red pen for loco's/unit's for years, although I used to highlight the numbers in my book, this changed a couple of years ago when I started to underline the numbers in my NREA with a red pen for haulage's.

Since getting heavily into aviation last year, I started doing the red pen in my Airliners to Europe spotting book. I actually quite enjoy doing aircraft haulage's, I know I won't get them all but is interesting to see what I get built up on some carriers, and haven't yet got bowled by the same one!

I do keep a log of what flights I have been on, flight numbers, routes, type of aircraft and sometimes I make a note of the seat numbers if they have been extra good.

I have not added much to this in recent years as I don't like flying nowadays.

I'd agree that haulage certainly ain't the right word. But, like "TheEdge", I've kept a track on FlightDiary since 2012.

Yes didn't know what to call it, planeage? Flyage? Not literally haulage of course, just using a generic description for red penning. I also have a Flight Diary, not as good as those above though!

I missed out doing the Virgin Little Red stuff, did manage to get EI-DEO with Aer Lingus after it was transferred though, still need the other 3.

Only had one dud so far, Ryanair's EI-EKL I think it was. Not bad considering I've done a fair few Ryanair flights. This thread has got me wanting to go flying again, not doing so until March currently!

I had 10 flights on VS Little Red. Half on EI-DEI and the other half on EI-EZW! Seemed they never sent any others up to ABZ. Their other two plans never made an appearance!

Still, with only four aircraft, some repetition was inevitable. (And, whilst I wasn't particularly trying to get all four, I did get EI-DEO when it was Aer Lingus before the LR days).

I have in the past had three different jobs which have involved a lot of travel and I keep a flight diary which shows the million miles (and a bit) I've flown. Happily now all I do is commute from Birmingham to Crewe, but we've just moved into a SE Asian market and I can see my old stamping grounds of SIN, KUL and BKK appearing on my work lists next year.

My most flown type is the Boeing 737-500, usually to catch a connection at the hellhole known as Frankfurt(Main).

Jules - Blimey, scratched some of Ryanair's fleet off already! There's is a PITA though, I've been to DUB three times for a day's spotting, seen them OTT from the garden, seen them elsewhere, and I still need half the 737 fleet for sight!! (Even red penned one to Bristol, problem is it was so new I couldn't red pen it in my book!)

What type will you be red penning to New York, one of Virgin's batch?

Some route's you'll get dud's straight away if you've done it before, but I found it as an easy way to do them, like G-RJXI which does the Brussels Airlines Bristol <-> Brussels with BMI's Embraer, but it's pretty much solid so easy to do, unless it's pulled off then G-RJX-something else will make an appearance.

Hopefully going to to do Gatwick - Amsterdam next year on Garuda Indonesia to scratch off one of their 777's!

I've got a lot of Ryanair's fleet for sight, like you however my book still looks empty! Over 300 planes in their fleet I believe so it will always be difficult to catch many of them. I seem to recall the newer B738s are to replace the older ones, so some you will find disappear from the book as deliveries take place. Only 15 planes scored with Ryanair according to my count, which is not many!

777 bashing sounds like rather good fun it must be said, I trust a trip report will follow?

It was an odd operation. One plane went back and forward to Manchester, one to Aberdeen, and two to Edinburgh. They seemed to change very infrequently, and sometimes very flight to Aberdeen for a few weeks would be operated by the same aircraft.

The fact most of my flights were in the same plane (and in the same seat!) didn't bother me in the slightest - they may have been duds but the flights were always exceptional for domestic routes and at really competitive fares.

Mainly Lufthansa with Thai or Singapore to get around SE Asia. The joys of Star Alliance stuff - even two years on, I'm still spending the miles.

With the new employers, the CEO is enamoured of Emirates, but I'm trying to persuade him that 1.8k on Thai is better than 2.3k on Emirates.

If you're looking for a cheap jolly, check out the Luton - Copenhagen route where an unusual price war is raging between easyJet and Ryanair, resulting in many all-in fares at £7, £10 and £14.

Yes, going back to the mid 1980s including Tristars from LHR-CDG, lots of 747s to Australia via Muscat/Abu Dhabi etc and Singapore/Kuala Lumpar.

Most recent additions are a couple of BA 319s to Amsterdam and back.

Don't know if it is regular but I saw an Iberia A340-600 doing Heathrow to Madrid the other day, wouldn't mind a bit of that. Hoping to do a Singapore 777 Manchester to Munich in the near future. 767, 787, A330 and A380 (All variants) are the more popular aircraft types I have ever sampled. Have to sort that out.

Yes the 340 is regular, I took that one a couple of years ago, chose it deliberately because it was a widebody.

The Singapore flight to Munich is quite often competitively priced. I had to go last minute to Munich earlier in the year and booked the flight for about £70 (single). Nice flight as well, far better than the Easyjet flight back, which btw was £10 more expensive.

I used the Singapore Airlines service Manchester-Munich quite a few times when I was living in Munich. Very nice on the 777 and often very competitively priced, only downside is that Munich-Manchester is one of the first flights out of Munich around 6am.
