Do trains have different driving qualities?

So in a diesel loco for example what are you looking for on the gauges to get it moving? I noticed the class 87 AC video it was on off on off the power to get it rolling then off he went. I know they have the amp gauge (or something like that) when you put it into the first notch I take it the amps drop as the traction motors transfer it to the wheels, then you click it back to let the amps build up again? Once its rolling with experience you can probably tell which notch to put it in just like gears in a car?

with not driving a loco I wouldn't know I just assume this is how it works from watching freight drivers I have cab rode with. What are the general gauges for in a loco and what is the most important one to look out for (as well as your speedo)

Something I've heard from Deltic drivers was that the climb up Holloway was a bit of a battle with the ammeter every time, mostly because of their high gearing. The concern was possible overheating or a flashover, and it probably didn't help that the old King's Cross layout was restricted to 8mph, so it was impossible to accelerate until going uphill in the tunnels (usually damp and greasy). In general, they couldn't open up to full power until New Southgate, and most logs show them topping out at 50-60. The Cravens DMUs on suburban services could beat that, and a Derby hydraulic unit could blow their doors off. Once the gradient became easier, drivers would give it the beans and rapidly build up to around 70-80.

Electrification used to produce 'races' between Deltics and 313s between Hatfield and Welwyn (which is also uphill). When a 47 ran VICE Deltic, the Flying Soctsman would sometimes be overtaken by a tiny 313 that had just started. Electrics can produce an almost-continuous tractive effort at low speed, so they tend to be very snappy off the mark.

Once over the top at Woolmer Green, it was possible to get a Deltic above 100 without over-stressing the motors, so drivers would just put them in top notch and leave them there. Curiously, 31s often showed a similar speed profile, although they were restricted to 90 and made their first stop at Stevenage, so in general they were just getting going when they had to hit the brakes.

I find that Turbostars vary enormously in their braking. Scotrails later batches have noticeable "softer" brakes then early units. However 2 units 170470/471 are just weird. The brakes seem different at every stop and I would be interested to see if any overshoots involved these units. They stop ok, its just very inconsistent!

... when I moved from DC to AC I noticed a huge difference, on DC an 8 car train is noticeably more sluggish at pulling away than a 4. On AC an 8 car is often faster off the mark than a 4.
I've not really noticed much of a difference between 4-car and 8-car trains though we don't really have many 4-car diagrams where you get up to the higher speeds.

The 377's seem phenomenally quick on AC in comparison to 319's and will reach 100mph on the MML in no time. Once south of the river the 319's become quicker, I assume down to their DC motors. The 377/5s are very sluggish on DC.

well , that all depends on load , gradient and weather .

loaded coal train , up hill gradient , dry rail .
i'd be looking for 3000A , 5 bar air train pipe then release the direct air brake .



as for different driving qualities for locos -

good stuff -

They were the former SPT units, weren't they? Wonder if that is anything to do with it?
