Do reduced petrol duties affect pump prices?

According to the Royal Automobile Club, fuel retailers are presently overcharging petrol by 7p per litre. The Guardian reports:

The RAC fuel spokesperson, Simon Williams, said: “In the last two weeks the wholesale cost of diesel has become 10p a litre more expensive than petrol, yet the gap at the pumps is only 5p. If retailers as a whole were playing fair with drivers, petrol would be at least 7p cheaper than it is now, down to about 150p from its current average of 157p.”

Remember the reduction in petrol duty by the government last year? It is money on the table that garages have been all too happy to take up.

They know how much the motoring community are willing to spend on a litre of petrol and will - quite naturally - charge that price.

I would put the duty back up again. Apparently the price of petrol would be little changed, but that money will now be going into the public coffers not private pockets.
