Hi everyone,

Just wondering, a few months ago when I was in carlisle, Duchess of Sutherland pulled in on a steam railtour. The train terminated in Carlisle and therefore gained another headcode before moving to some sidings. I saw one of the crew on the loco open up a cupboard and fiddle with something in there for a while. Would this have been the GSM-R or do steam locos not have this?
On a similar note, do steam locos have AWS and if they do surely they wouldn't be able to hear the bell/horn?
Any comments on this matter?

Thanks

It's possible locos were AWS fitted before they were withdrawn from frontline service. AWS is old kit, from the 1950s if I remember correctly.

All locomotives deemed fit to operate on the national network must have OTMR, GSMR, AWS and TAMPER PROOF TPWS and RETB equipment where required. In addition, they must be fitted with or carry a high intensity headlight and tail lamp.

Tornado also has electric lights and USB charging points - advantage of being a new build.

Is the AWS normal or visual based, or would you be able to hear the horn? I'm asking because surely the noise of the wind would mean you wouldn't be able to hear it?

Normal as in horn, bell and visual - AWS is hardly new to use in a steam locomotive cab, having been around since the 1940s and more widespread from the late 1950s

Was first used in a primitive form on the GWR from the 1920s
