Reading the bbc news pages on teletext for the west mids - I noticed Network Rail have applied to extend Stoke on Trents platform 2 by 52ft for running 11 car trains (the app needed because it is a listed building) my question - apologies if I've missed something - does this mean the 11 car pendos WILL be used on the west coast because I thought there was uncertainty over their deployment?

I would have thought this is more likely part of the process of preparing for the extension of most of the existing 390s to 11 cars than anything to do with 054?

No they were always for west Coast, but DaFT didn't want Virgin using them.

Or rather the government wouldnt pay to put them into service immediatley upon delivery rather than two from now when planned because that woulda cost more moola.

11 car 390s will be used on the WCML within the next franchise as 31 of the existing sets will be lengthened to 11 carriages

Alternative view, the government quite rightly wouldn't pay the additional subsidy Virgin were demanding to cover their supposed risks of running the longer trains.

Its the same running cost subsidy the dft are pledged to pay in two years time, they just were not prepared to start paying it immediatley.
