On the BBC railways programme on a good few weeks ago, the Scottish EC drivers only signed to Newcastle

Cheers mate.

I've asked ? On here and thought it was Newcastle and Aberdeen but my mate asked staff at Waverely who seemed to think when they lost Glasgow Central route and depending on shift some went to Donny.

Re. drivers - some are, some not. Partly depends on if there's an ECS within the diagram - not enough time to work two return trips and work an ECS move.

ECS move?
Is that moving units from Depot?

Yeah - each set has to get from and to a depot at the start and end of a day (and some also visit a depot during the day also)

Thanks for info.

Seems like Newcastle would be more interesting depot to work from than Edinburgh if you were a driver

I've never had confirmation on this but I believe the top link at Newcastle have the largest (by distance) route card in the country for a passenger TOC - they sign both London and Inverness IIRC, some 580 miles; I'd also assume there'll be diversionary routes in there and perhaps Leeds and Glasgow? Anybody able to confirm (and if it's incorrect provide a correct answer)?

I'm pretty sure Heaton drivers sign the Tyne Valley and WCML from Carlisle to Glasgow & Edinburgh for the autumnal diversions.

Newcastle drivers do sign Newcastle - Carlisle via Hexham, but not further; Carlisle - WCML - Edinburgh is Edinburgh only.

Newcastle also work the Inverness services between Edinburgh and Inverness, but not the Glasgow - that's an Edinburgh driver beyond Edinburgh.

Still don't understand why it's Newcastle men that sign Chieftain route

Historical and now adays its just because Newcastle fight to keep the work.

It dosnt make much difference anyway as even an Edinburgh driver couldn't do Inverness and back in a day with the turnaround time, infact Newcastle are probably more productive doing it as they can work one train to Edinburgh and then have a break before working another to Inverness. An Edinburgh man wouldn't have time to di Inverness to Edinburgh after lodging and then go anywhere else and back.
