I noticed today at Newcastle Station, there is straightforward access to platform 12 .. you don't even need to go through any barriers.

Do any trains actually arrive here while carrying passengers ?

The June 2025 sectional appendix shows it as being OOU.

I believe there were some changes around that end to extend the usable platform length of 11 so that 5-car TPE services could use it.

TPE Class 802 (Nova 1) trains to Liverpool have used that platform.

Edit: confused this with platform 11.

The ‘platform’ isn’t even show as having any (functional) track or signals on the Opentraintimes map. Not even as a siding.

I can imagine it only ever being used by longer distance services, so the guard has time to go through everyone after departure?

12 has been put of use since mid-2023, it was taken out of use to permit longer trains in platform 11.

As others have said, it was taken out of use in order to lengthen platform 11. The track is not connected to the junction any more.

Similar to what happened at Wigan North Western (platform 2 abandoned to make platform 3
a more useful length)

It was the desire to fit the TPE Nova 1s in Platform 11 that saw the change occur IIRC. Platform 12 was indeed a bit of a strange one and not too commonly used due to it being in the unpaid area.

P12 was used primarily to house Northern units which sit in Newcastle for long periods, and thus only saw occasional journeys departing from it (the one-a-day Newcastle to Whitehaven direct service being one I recall - a relic of the past now) though I did see the occasional Crosscountry unit using it. Like other's have said, it was disconnected and taken OOU to allow lengthening of P11 to accommodate 802 usage, where previously they were having to take up the through platforms.

From December XC are primarily timetabled for P10, TPE for P11, and a Northern unit will sit in P9 for most of the day.

This (the opportunity for on train revenue checks) would genuinely have little difference upon platform allocations.
