Do 800s and 802s have different front-ends?

I just spotted this Tweet with a picture of an 802 and 800 at Paddington. I'm not sure which way round they are, but it looks like the one on the left has a slightly shallower sloped front window.

Is this actually the case, or am I imagining things?

Domh245 is correct. The two types are virtually identical except for one or two bits of 'hidden' equipment.

Without wishing to start a new thread for something which is so minor, I notice the 5-car Class 800s have white striping around their doors but not the 9-car variants or the Class 802s. Is there a reason for this? I think it's quite smart myself but strange it isn't applied fleet wide.

I am sure it has probably been mentioned but I wouldn't know where to begin to look.

The 800/0 fleet is painted grey and has green vinyls - the 800/3s and 802s are painted green. The grey bits are where no vinyl was applied.

As mentioned the 800s have vinyls. I did ask GWR if they would paint them or vinyl those bits to match the rest of the fleet, and the basic answer was no. Maybe something will be done at their 5 year refresh.

As Hitachi own the 800 fleet, they are incredibly precious as to what does on to the sides of what they see as "their units". It seems Hitachi also dictates the amount of stickers that currently goes onto the sides of the units, so I would be surprised if they eventually lowed them to be re-painted unless the DfT had paid them off fully first.

Does this actually matter in some way? Especially enough to consider actually changing it?

I am not very keen on the dark green chosen by GWR. That said, the painted ones look much better. The ones with vinyl look very dull - getting on for army tank colour dull.

Regarding the shape of the nose: this can look different depending on the amount of zoom used with a camera. (Zoom on a train in the distance coming towards you & the coaches appear much shorter - thus, you are not seeing the true length of the carriages).

I assume that this is the same reason as why the GWR badge is (or was, it might have been applied by now) missing from the nose of the 800s?

You're right; in some shots the vinyled units can look almost black.
That said, I personally love GWR's branding idea; by going with a classy, dark colour they are really echoing the heritage of the GWR name. I certainly prefer it to when FirstGroup just slapped the word First in front of the name of the franchise and called it a day. I liked Dynamic Lines on the TPE Desiros but it really doesn't suit an HST in my opinion.

It's also far preferable to the current trend of primarily white liveries. Think Avanti, LNER, Northern, South Western, Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern, Southeastern, Greater Anglia, Transport for Wales and Greater Anglia (although I do like their livery on the FLIRTs).

Hitachi don't own the fleet do they its the consortium Agiltiy Trains which owns them, But yeah Hitachi do seem to think that the 800s are there trains, even though GWR/DFT are paying for them. One of the reason the IET deal was so bad but that's for another time.

But Agility Trains is 70% owned by Hitachi as I understand it. The AxA and John Laing interests seem to be Financial.

Maybe First Group should invest, that way any lease payments from GWR go back into their pocket, and if Hitachi say "Sorry you can't put this sticker on", First can reply "Yes we can we own these trains". Joking
