The Romford-Upminster 315/321 always strikes me as complete overkill, but again GA have nothing more suitable.

ScotRail's class 318 units. They were originally designed for the fast Ayr to Glasgow services, and they have no problem running long sections at 90mph.

In 2011, the new class 380s took over all the Ayrshire Coast services, so the 318s have started being used on slower local services on the Argyle Line. They run the local services pretty well, but they're not getting the speed they were designed for :D

Semi-interesting point: In the mid 2000s, the class 334 fleet were being used for a lot of the Ayr to Glasgow services. In 2008, word spread on train forums that the 334s weren't doing great on the Ayr to Glasgow line, and ScotRail wanted to move them somewhere else. I never heard it confirmed by anyone official, but I noticed a lot more Ayr services were class 318s after that.

Queen Street and Edinburgh services are commuter services being served by 170s which are designed for the role, mid carriage doors etc. Glasgow Central to Newcastle isn't intended for getting from Glasgow to Newcastle, it's a rural service in SW Scotland and Northern England served by 156s which are suited to this purpose.

Indeed, and anyone who wants to go from to/from Newcastle/Carlisle and Edinburgh/Glasgow will just board a Virgin, TransPennine, East Coast or CrossCountry service.

I'm pretty sure that every train to, from and through Hazel Grove is diesel, despite the lines being fully electrified from Manchester. At least it was like that a couple of years ago anyway...

I think it stills runs, it's the 1922 from Manchester. I could be wrong, though.
