I agree. Don’t give up if it’s your dream to drive trains! It often takes several attempts to secure one of these roles.
Keep at it, look at what you can improve on, apply again and you have every chance of success next time!

I failed my DMI the first time round but passed it the second. Get feedback and try again.

Feeling a little deflated at the moment. I did a huge amount of background prep on the TOC, Aims, Values, stock, routes etc probably to the detriment of some of my answers. I was asked questions that I could not in any way able to link them to my strongest examples. Was left trying to think of examples off the cuff which probably were quite weak. My advice to others is to make sure you have a lot of different examples relating to customer service

The hard part if over and you can now refocus on the feedback you get. You can have multiple DMIs so there is no fear of a two strike rule. Most TOCs state that if you fail any part of the process you need to wait six months. Some don't so keep an eye out on any upcoming vacancies. I know a few people that have failed at one DMI but then got success at the same TOC but different depot.
Just keep pushing forward.

I have both lives still in tact and my assessment day passes from July 2019. I may have a re think when the dust has settled and go from there. My fear is if leave it too long, a change of franchise, or even if Dept of Transport get their way and strip franchises from TOC's and obtain all the revenue from ticket sales, who knows what may happen with recruitment. Could well be an industry change. Let's be honest the Williams Review is compelling as to what the Gov't and DFT are trying to do

What sort of questions did they ask you? I am aware all companies will ask different things but any information would be useful.
Do your research on here. No two interviews are the same. It's competitive for a reason and I'm not about to give a list of questions. Sorry
Thanks for the advice. Appreciated. Still a little raw at the moment as I really was expecting, not being arrogant, to do better and pass and move to the MMI. Maybe my face didn't fit, maybe my examples were weak, or just up against many better candidates. I'll never know. I've been offered feedback which I have replied that I would like some, so will see what it says. I don't imagine it will be detailed.
Not the best start to the new year, least now I can concentrate on the divorce

No worries. I have already passed my MMI so the DMI is up next for me with the FOC I have applied with. Good luck with any future applications.
I failed my first and passed my second. Just treat it as as learning experience and come back stronger for your next one. If you've also got your psychometric tests completed through your first application, then you've got a big advantage straight away on your next application
Did you re apply to same TOC ? If so did you have to complete a new application and go through sifting process, or did you bypass all of that as you had your valid assessment day passes and enter at the interview stage where your previous application ended?
My original application was with freightliner. I then applied to northern just did the initial sift then had interview and straight to medical after that.
It's a lottery the whole sift. Just as I got through first time no guarantee next eh
True be positive and keep applying that's all you can do if you've done it once you'll do it again. Like I said its crap to get that far and fail but you're in a good position with your tests just emphasise the point on your covering letter.

I failed my first DMI and am now training with a TOC having passed my second.
Learn from it and you will be better prepared!

Thanks Steve. Think I'm just rubbing salt in the wounds at moment and I'm sure I'll bounce back when the dust has settled. I've a new job anyway due to start in March which may or may not make things clearer for me. Nowhere near as good money compared to the qualified train driver pay. ...but is it all about the money? Hmmm

I earn just slightly more than a qualified Train Driver, and work 3 days. But i dont enjoy what i do. Id be a train driver anyday thats my goal. Some people would love my current job but not me.
